PROFESSOR BERTIE WILKINSON

This volume of studies is presented to Professor Bertie Wilkinson in the hope that the authors and subscribers may thereby acknowledge in some small part the many debts we owe to him as scholars and as friends . The essays are confined to the medieval period, largely to aspects of the later middle ages in England. In a sense this is especially fitting for it is here that Professor Wilkinson finds himself most at home exploring the greatest theme of history: "The unending story of men's efforts to reconcile order and liberty, the two essential ingredients of a truly great civilization." Professor Wilkinson's skill in the use and interpretation of contemporary sources is writ large over the course of English medieval history, his influence as a scholarly teacher is more extensive still, and his friendships on two continents transcend all bounds of discipline, class, and age. Those of us, young and old, who have known and worked with Professor Wilkinson will not soon forget that cherished privilege. T.A.s. M.R.P. Toronto, June 1968
