In the notes I have confined myself mainly to genealogical matters and made them as brief as is consistent with clarity Further notes on individual persons will occasionally be found 1n the index. There is a certain amount of repetition of the same material in slightly different form in the various tracts. A few cross-references will be found 1n the notes. These are arranged so that the first appearance has cross-references to the later appear

in ByS 2, Dd and E read Ithael hael and are shown in ordinary type, but G and H read Ithel hael and are therefore shown in italics, A dash means that the name, word, or item is missing from the text indicated.

Transliteration of Cardi]? MS. 25

In Cardiff MS. 25 the system of orthography uses dots placed

under and over letters with the following meanings: c; = ch,

d=dd, g=ng, 1=11, 1=1, pzph, rzrh, r=r, 1:111,

11 = w, a == â, ê == ê, etc. The letter 20 is also used as a consonant. The transliteration is made. according to the above rules except that where a dot has been omitted or wrongly inserted the necessary correcti-on is made and the corresponding letters are printed in a

type different from . that of the rest of the word. .

The Expulsion of the Déisi The Déisi were an Irish tribe traditionally descended from Vise}... Suidge, son of Fedelmid Rechtaid a legendary High King. The talt ni" their expulsions and wanderings occurs in two main versions, the nl(l( r of which appears in four manuscripts. Bodleian MS. Rawlinson B 502 (twelfth century), Bodleian MS. Historia Brittonum The Historia Brittonum is found 1n many manuscripts. The earliest 1s Z in Chartres MS. 98, written c. 900, but it is fragmentary, a poor text, and probably was not intended to be a complete c0py. Next 1n date 13 M, in Vatican MS. Reginae 1964 of the eleventh century. It'1s a good

text but lacks the Preface and'1s otherwise incomplete. Next 1n date, and one of the most important texts, is H,'1n Harleian MS. 3859, dated c. 1100. It is complete except for the Preface which is missing. The standard edition, based on all the most important texts, is that of Theodor Mommsen in Monumenta Germaniae Historica, Auctores Awäguim'mi, tom. xiii (= Chronica Minora Saec. ii)—vii, vol. 3), Berlin,

Welsh Genealogies from Harleian MS. 3859 The Historia Brittonum in Harleian MS. 3859 has a complete set of ‘appendixes’, two of which are not found in any other manuscript. These are the ‘Annales Cambriae’ and ‘Welsh Genealogies’. The two tracts were edited with great exactness by Egerton Phillimore in Y

Cymmrodor, 9 ( 1888), pp. 152—69 and 169—83, respectively. The same

remarks apply to these tracts as those already made on the rest of the

Historia Brittonum found in Harleian 3859. See above, page 5. The genealogies commence with that of Owain ap Hywel Dda on his father’s and his mother’s side, and were probably, therefore, compiled during his reign, that is, before 988. The Annales Cambriae were probably completed in 9 54, and if, as is likely, they were compiled by the.-same person, this is also the date of the genealogies in their present form The compiler was evidently a partisan of Hywel Dda and the

Bonedd Gwŷr y Gogledd. Bonedd Gwŷry Gogledd, ‘The Lineage Of the lV-Ien ”F the Xfm-il,“ short tract which first appears in Peniarth MS. 45 of the late thirty:F

century. It gives the pedigrees of twenty princes \«yho How-ishe, in tl latter part of the sixth century in north Br1.ta1n.'L1ke Bonedd y silff—hr]; was probably drawn up in its original form in the twelfth . cena";

( T FP p. cxxx). Unlike ByS, very few later verswns of this trac, ms:

but much of the material, Whether drawn from the tract itself or firm; similar traditional sources, was incorporated in other genealogical docu.

ments, for example, later versions of ByS. Some of the material of BGG overlaps with the contents of HG and JC, and there are some discrepancies. There is also overlapping with the

material edited below under the title Bonedd yr Arwyr, mater ial Which

was probably put together about a century later than BGG. Some of the later texts of ByA have incorporated material from BGG which did not appear in the original text of ByA. These are the texts FGH] listed below;

The Only other versions of BGG known to me are those in Peniarth
