Preface This new dictionary of English and Russian is a tool with more than 45,000 references for learners of the Russian language at beginner’s or intermediate level. A large number of idiomatic expressions has been included. The user-friendly layout with all headwords in blue allows the user to have quick access to all the words, expressions and their translations. Clarity of presentation has been a major objective. Is flimsy re¬ ferring to furniture the same in Russian as flimsy referring to an excuse? This dictionary is rich in sense distinctions like this - and in translation options tied to specific, identified senses. Vocabulary needs grammar to back it up. In this dictionary you will find extra grammar information on the conjugation and de¬ clension of Russian verbs, nouns and adjectives. The additional activity section provides the user with an oppor¬ tunity to develop language skills with a selection of engaging word puzzles. The games are designed specifically to improve vocabulary, spelling, grammar and comprehension in an enjoy¬ able style. Designed for a wide variety of uses, this dictionary will be of great value to those who wish to learn Russian and have fun at the same time.

How to Use the Dictionary 1. Arrangement. Strict alphabetical order has been maintained throughout the dictionary. A number of prefixed words, especially verbs, are not explicitly listed be¬ cause of the limited size of the dictionary, and in such cases it may prove useful to drop the prefix and look up the primary form, e. g.: nobnaroflapMTb -> SnaroflapwTb Compounds not found at their alphabetical place should be reduced to their second component in order to find out their main meaning, e. g.: TepMoriflepHbift —> riflepi-ibM = nuclear The tilde (~) serves as a mark of repetition. The tilde in bold type replaces either the headword or the part of the headword preceding the vertical bar; e. g.: MflMJ...; ~MHeCKMM = HflHJl/lliHeCKHM

In the English-Russian part the tilde in multi-word lexical units is used to replace the whole headword, e.g.: mobil e

~

phone = mobile phone

In the Russian-English part the tilde in idioms is used to relace the part pre¬ ceding the vertical bar, e. g.: KO/ib|ueBOM ...; ~mo

...;

odpynanbHoe „i\o

-

o6pyna/ibHoe Kortbiio

The tilde with a circle (2): when the first letter changes from a capital to a small letter or vice-versa, the usual tilde is replaced by the tilde with a circle. In brackets a hyphen (-) has been used instead of the tilde, e. g.: 6paTb

[6epy, -pewb; 6pa/i, -a ...] = [6epy, bepeuib; 6pa/i, 6pana ...]

Of the two main aspects of a Russian verb the imperfective form appears first, in boldface type, followed, in acute-angled brackets < >, by its perfec¬ tive counterpart. 2. Pronunciation. As a rule the pronunciation of individual Russian head¬ words has been given only in cases and places that differ from the standard pronunciation of Russian vowel and consonant letters, e. g.: jierKMM

(-xk-) - «tk» is pronounced «xk».

3. Stress. The accent mark (') is placed above the stressed vowel of a Russian entry (or any other) word with more than one syllable and printed in full, as well as of run-on words, provided their accentuated vowel is not covered by the tilde or hyphen (= marks of repetition), e. g.: flOK33 blBaTb ..., =

Since e is always stressed the two dots over it represent implicitly the accent mark. Wherever the accent mark precedes the tilde (%*) the second-last syllable of the part for which the tilde stands is stressed, e. g.: yBeflOM|jlflTb

..., KKa /[5; g/pl.: ->KeK], like no>Ka/[5], is declined according to paradigm 5, except that in the genitive plural the former example inserts the “epenthe¬ tic” e between the two last stem consonants: noxeK; cf. ndflKa /[5; g/pl.'. -flOK] = [g/pl.: noflOK]. KycOK m [1; -CKa] = the “epenthetic” o is omitted in the oblique cases of the

singular and in all cases of the plural; cf. KOHei4 m [1; etc.].

-Hqa] = [KOHLia, KOHLty,

As the prefixed forms of a verb follow the same inflection model and (with the exception of perfective aspects having the stressed prefix Bbi-) mode of accentuation as the corresponding unprefixed verb, differences in stress, etc. have in cases of such aspect pairs been marked but once, viz. with the imperfective form. 5.

Government. Case government, except for the accusative, is indicated with the help of Latin and Russian abbreviations. Emphasis has been laid on differences between the two languages, including the use of prepositions. Whenever a special case of government applies only to one of several mean¬ ings of a word, this has been duly recorded in connection with the meaning concerned. To ensure a clear differentiation of person and thing in govern¬ ment, the English and Russian notes to that effect show the necessary corre¬ spondence in sequence.

6.

Semantic distinction. If a word has different meanings and, at the same time, different forms of inflection or aspect, this has been indicated by num¬ bers (e. g. 6nTb, Koca, KOCMTb); otherwise a semicolon separates different meanings, a comma mere synonyms. Sense indicators in italics serve to specify individual shades of meanings, e. g. no/jHMMaTb ... rpeBory, nnary raise; opyxue take up; cpnar hoist; tiKopb weigh; napyca set; myM make; npueMHbm ... nacbi office; aioa/wen entrance; oreq, CbiH foster. In a number of Russian verbs the perfective aspect indicated (particularly with the prefixes and ) has, strictly speaking, the connotations “to begin to do s. th.” (the former) and “to do s. th. for a (little) while” (the latter); but since these forms are very often rendered in English by means of the equivalent verb without any such additions they have occasionally been given as simple aspect counterparts without explicit indication as to their aforesaid connotations.

7.

Orthography. In both the Russian and English parts newest spelling stand¬ ards have been applied, and in the latter differences between American and British usage noted wherever possible and feasible. Words at the end of a line which are always hyphenated are indicated by re¬ petition of the hyphen (at the end of the first line and the beginning of the next line). In parts of words or additions given in brackets a hyphen is placed within the bracket.

Russian Pronunciation I. Vowels 1. All vowels in stressed position are half-long in Russian. 2. In unstressed position Russian vowels are very short, except in the first pretonic syllable, where this shortness of articulation is less marked. Some vowel letters (notably o, e, a), when read in unstressed position, not only dif¬ fer in length (quantity), but also change their timbre, i.e. acoustic quality.

= The jer or ‘hard sign’ separates a hard (final) consonant of a prefix and the ini¬ tial vowel, preceded by (j), of the follow¬ ing root, thus marking both the hardness of the preceding consonant and the dis¬ tinct utterance of (j) before the vowel: npeflT»HBHTb [ppdji'yit,] ‘to show, pro¬ duce’ ci>e3fl [sjest] ‘congress’.

Explanation of its pronunciation It is also used before vowels to indicate the softness of a preceding consonant as well as the pronunciation of (j) with the respective vowel, e.g.: ceMba [§irp'ja] ‘family’ -cf ceMH [Rental ‘seed’, and in foreign words, such as SaTajibOH [bata'ljon] ‘battalion’.
