Lars Muller

It wasn’t until | opened the German

much

version of this book that | realized how

both the world of graphic design and | were in debt to my old friend

Mualler-Brockmann.

So-called

Swiss

design

is as much

“Miller-Brockmann”

as it is any other

single personage. It is as much a matter of discipline as a matter of style. And

though it is not as much in evidence today as it was when Miller-Brockmann switched

from

being

an

illustrator

to a practicing

graphic

designer,

(with

emphasis on typographic rather than pictorial solutions), he nevertheless has put his stamp, however subliminally, on the whole world of graphic design.

Muller-Brockmann

is indeed

fortunate

having

men

like Ernst Keller, Alfred

Willimann, and Hans Finsler as mentors. But his world is wider than the world of design.

Painting

and music

are among

his real inclinations.

His work

is

clear evidence that he believes, as | do, that graphic design is an art, no less than painting, sculpture, or architecture. The same aesthetics (with addition-

al restraints for the graphic designer) dictate its disciplines and its forms.

His posters for the Tonhalle

reveal an artist at work,

as well as one who

fathoms the world of communication, with a particular audience for a particu-

lar function. His posters are comfortable in the worlds of art and music. They do not try to imitate

musical

notation,

but they evoke

the very sounds

of

music by visual equivalents — not a simple task.

Fifty years ago my friend E. McKnight Kauffer, the great poster artist, wrote, “a competent

(rare though

he is) believes

can

virtue both to the advertiser

and to the public. Fear, sex, sentimentality, snobbism such are the themes of ninety percent of advertising that daily haunt our eyes. Hitting below the belt,

appealing to our fears, and undermining our ideals — a vortex of banalities, a rubbish dump of overstatement, corrosives that eat into the daily lives of our citizens.”*

Clearly,

Muller-Brockmann

is the

kind

of serious

designer

about

whom

McKnight Kauffer was writing. His posters and printed ephemera are symbols of his beliefs, his courage, his integrity, his respect for quality, and his appeal

to the dignity of his audience.

Josef Miller-Brockmann’s

impassioned and sudden appearance on the stage

of constructive graphic design in the early 50s, at the age of almost 40, gives pause. What biographical developments

preceded this energetic statement?

What context created the conditions for an abrupt change from a subjective

and illustrative view of design to one that was objective and constructive? The answer

takes us back to the 30s, to the formative

days when

MB, the

designer, and Swiss Graphic Design were still following separate paths.

Searching

_After breaking off his training as a graphic designer, MB audited courses by

Ernst Keller and Alfred Willimann at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts! from 1932 to 1934. Keller, the driving force behind training in graphic design, advo-

‘cated the traditional arts and crafts approach. He was a master of type design and perfected a flat, stylized treatment

of pictorial elements. Willimann taught

typography in the photographic class set up by Hans Finsler in 1932 and had an affinity with the Bauhaus.

Keller, Willimann and Finsler exerted a consider-

able influence on the younger generation of Swiss graphic designers and photographers.

) MB acquired

a wide range of design skills from

both Keller and Willimann.

MB successfully applied to design the pavilion of honor for the Universities of Switzerland and the sections on the “History of Swiss Art” and “Physics and Medicine.” In retrospect the project was inconsequential for his career, but it provided valuable experience and gave him the opportunity to meet prominent illustrators and graphic designers.

At the Landi he was particularly impressed by Hans Erni’s large mural on the

theme of “Switzerland, Vacation Country for the Nations.” He decided to pursue his search for a design style like Erni’s by following in his footsteps and studying under Léger and Ozenfant in Paris, but this move

was thwarted

MB established himself as an illustrator in the 40s and developed a drawing style that was distinctively his own, frequently with surrealistic and humorous traits. Exhibition design continued

to be a focal point of his activities. The

Zurich Department of Culture provided

him with a number

of contracts.

MB

showed great skill and sensitivity in staging exhibition displays.

With his flair for scenic and three-dimensional

presentation and on the look-

out for new experiences, MB designed stage sets for various theaters in Switz-

erland and abroad up to the early 50s.

Experience

in the war years led MB to the belief that graphic design - if it

was to inform and enlighten without being manipulative - had to be based on

objective criteria. Deeply interested in 20s typography and advertising design, he studied the work and theories of Lissitzky, Moholy-Nagy, Tschichold, Burchartz and the Rasch

brothers,

but he also concentrated

on the objective

Swiss graphic design of the 30s. Gradually these studies began to affect his own work. Carlo Vivarelli, an outstanding young graphic artist and the director of the Boggeri studio in Milan from 1946 -1947, worked with MB as a typographer

But the sudden expansion of his design repertory is still amazing. The difference is clearly noticeable in the 1951 series of posters for the Zurich Tonhalle. They are a marked departure from the illustrative posters produced in the pre\

vious year for the Zurich June Festival.

The accident barometer designed during the same

period for a Zurich police

campaign is evidence of sophisticated design applied to local needs. After a sentimental journey back into the theater world — MB designed the puppets

and set for a production

of Paul Hindemith’s

design questions was a rarity. Occasionally the issue was debated in the magazines “Werk” and “Graphis”, the latter published in Zurich from 1944 onwards.

In 1949 it was again Max Bill who stimulated discussion on design with his exhibition, “Die gute Form” (Good Design), which examined the fundamentals

of industrial design. Bill argued that an object used “...daily and all the time, from a pin to interior décor [should

be designed]

developed from function, and that through this beauty it fulfills a function of

its own.”!2

Zurich was the center of constructive graphic design until the mid 40s. After 1946 support came

from

Basel. Armin

Hofmann,

a pupil of Keller, Willimann

and Finsler in Zurich, started teaching graphic design at the Trade School in Basel at the age of 26. His approach complemented

to design and his teaching

methods,

by Emil Ruder’s course in the basics of typography, made an

almost immediate impact on the work of the first graduates in the late 40s.

The young designers used the opportunities offered by the advertising department of the chemical

firm J.R. Geigy AG to produce

exemplary work in the

spirit of functional graphic design. The early 50s saw what might be called a

symbiosis between Geigy and Armin Hofmann’s graphic design class.'? Year after year students

moved

into the Geigy studio,

effectively applying

their

training to practical briefs and finding their own means of expression through design within certain boundaries.

Despite its strict principles, the Basel school under Hofmann still allowed students to explore forms and examine the effects of these forms, including the

posters. The Basel school and its more austere Zurich coun-

terpart contributed equally to the image of Swiss Graphic Design in the 50s and 60s. Seen in an international and historical context, they are variations on

the same theme. The early Basel group includes Max Schmid, Karl Gerstner, Nelly Rudin, Gérard Ifert and Igildo Biesele.

MB developed

an enduring

passion for poster design. The medium

His own

development

from

illustrative

to constructive

graphic design, as he describes it, reveals a radically new professional image of the graphic artist as a vehicle of objective and informative communication

and design.

In 1957, scarcely five years after his declaration

of faith in constructive

graphic design, MB made the important decision to move on from pure appli-

cation to the field of education. He was anxious to test the educational potential of his own

experience. There was a reason

handful perceived the movement as a new school and were able to formulate timeless principles of visual communication.

_ MB was followed by Richard Paul Lohse, Hans Neuburg and Carlo Vivarelli. On MB’s suggestion they founded the magazine “New Graphic Design” in 1958 in order to promote what they considered the only tenable approach to graphic expression

at the time. The adjective “new”

signified a break with the past

preferred to retain the term “Swiss Graphic Design” and identified it with specific designers, MB being one of its most popular exponents. Sy

The uncompromising

ethical and aesthetic message

exclusively propagated

by New Graphic Design was reflected in MB’s practical work. In 1959, after a newspaper article on the carcinogenic effects of nicotine had been drawn to his attention, he immediately ceased to work for Turmac, the cigarette manu-

i

facturer, and imposed strict guidelines for his agency’s choice of work. Consequently political propaganda was excluded as stringently as the advertising

of potentially harmful commodities. _

Consolidation

Increasing distrust of any pictorial design emerged

in MB’s music posters in

the early 60s. In the years 1955 to 1959, following the design of the controversial Beethoven

Teaching graphic design at the School of Arts and Crafts, Zurich, 1957-1960

In 1957 MB was appointed to head the department of graphic design. His teaching methods and views on design deviated substantially from those of his predecessor Ernst Keller. His program

focused exclusively on functional and objective graphic design. The intensive foundation course and practical work were complemented

by

related courses in general education. Field trips

included visits to Apulia and Southern Germany. MB invited musicians like John Cage and Ravi Shankar to introduce the students to their music.

MB developed plans for reforming the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts. He proposed eliminating

a number of specialized courses and limiting the length of teaching appointments. His suggestions were rejected. MB resigned in 1960, after four years of teaching at the school.

The Graphic Artist and his Design Problems

Creative Problems of the Graphic Designer

Design and Training in Commercial Art

In his first book MB presented his method of “systematic graphic design training,” tried and tested in the graphic design class at the Zurich

School of Arts and Crafts from 1957 to 1960. Illustrating his theories with students’ work, he

described the progression from basic exercises to the theory of proportion, rules of typography,

concepts of typography and finally practical application. MB used his own work to explain the

development from illustrative to objective graphic design and the meaning of the design elements — typography, photography, drawing,

text, logo and color — in advertising.

The book “...provides the receptive graphic designer with valuable guidance on fundamental design problems. It gives teachers a new approach to training young people...”

Paul Rand.

In 1967 MB organized the “Concrete Art of Zurich” exhibition for the IBM Gallery in New York, showing work by Max and Jakob Bill, Loewensberg, Graeser, Christen and Vivarelli. It was

the Zurich School’s first exhibition in the United States. Exhibitions by photographers Hans

Finsler and Gotthard Schuh were also initiated by MB.

In 1988 MB completed his last project as a consultant for IBM: a book on the principles behind IBM’s graphic design.

Muller-Brockmann & Co. Zurich Advertising Agency, Photography and Graphic Design Studio 1967-1984

Wishing to offer his clients an up-to-date and comprehensive advertising service, MB reorganized his studio in 1967 and set up an advertising agency with three younger partners.

The partners in Miller-Brockmann & Co. were MB

himself, Peter Andermatt, who had worked for MB since 1961 as a graphic designer and latterly as studio director, Ruedi Ruiegg, a graphic designer in MB’s studio from 1960 to 1963 and again from

1965, and Max Baltis, typographer and advertising consultant. The partners handled commissions from industry and commerce and for cultural institutions; they had up to 15 employees.

MB organized public forum events on visual and verbal communication

under the aegis of the

agency.

In 1975 Peter Andermatt withdrew from the part-

nership. The other partners separated in 1976, after differences of opinion about the philosophical direction the agency should take. MB con-

tinued to run the agency with a small staff until

1984.

Galerie 58 1965-1973

galerie seestrasse

1974-1990

MB founded “Galerie 58” in Rapperswil with architects Kurt and Eugen Federer in 1965. Its sole aim was to promote constructive and

concrete art. The gallery acquired an international reputation with exhibitions on Zurich concrete

artists and pioneers like Josef Albers, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart and Johannes Itten.

When the Federer brothers pulled out in 1974 MB continued with the gallery under a new name and founded acircle of “Friends of the galerie seestrasse” to support it.

Over 150 exhibitions were mounted

between

1965 and 1990. MB has occasionally put on exhibitions in his own home since the Rapperswil gallery closed.
