Chapter 1 – What to do before you start Every DIY job, whether it is big or small, must start with a plan. This might seem a waste of time if you are going to hang a few pictures in the lounge, but even a list of the 5 items that you need to complete the job is in essence a plan. For larger undertakings, like renovating a room definitely needs a plan – the more detailed, the better. A plan is essential because: 1. It saves time – If you have all the tools and material ready, you do not need to run around finding things. 2. It saves money – By proper planning, you can estimate the quantity of materials that you need more accurately. You can also budget better for the entire project. 3. You need to plan resources – Most small DIY jobs around the house can be managed by one person, but on larger projects you might need a hand. Help may come from a spouse, kids, friends or family. In some cases you need to plan for experts to be on site for example plumbers or electricians. By following your plan, they will be at the site on the right day, at the right time. 4. It helps you manage the project – It is very easy to forget a small detail. Without a proper plan you might find yourself on extra trips to the hardware store or to the lumber yard. It also helps you organize your resources to be at the right place, at the right time. Things invariably change as a project unfolds, it is therefore important to keep your plan flexible. It will also help to keep a clipboard handy for your plan, sketches, notes, purchase slips and any other documentation on your project for easy reference. It saves a lot of time by not looking for things when you need them. Hacks for planning. 1. Involve and inform everybody in your household about the project/s. This could mean extra hands to help you, or even better ideas as you get input from your loved ones. 2. If you have more than one project planned prioritize by Emergency (serious repairs that need immediate attention like

smoke detectors or escape routes that are blocked); then by Security (locks, gates, alarm system etc.); then prioritize the rest by time available and resources. 3. Once a job is complete, remove the documentation from your clipboard and file in your project file. This will give you access to suppliers or contacts for specialists if you need them in the future. In the following chapters we will explore each room in the house and give you some tips and hints on improving your living space. We urge you to read through all the hacks, as most of these can be used in any room in the house.

Chapter 2 –Proven Living room hacks As the name implies, a living room is a place for the family to share time together. Sometimes you watch a movie or a TV program, other times the room is used for board games or TV games. It is also a place for informal gettogethers with friends and family. So this is a versatile room and sees a lot of traffic. Because of the diverse uses of this room it needs to be functional, properly spaced and have ample storage for everything that is needed in the room. Quick hacks: 1. Remove the clutter. Get as much as possible off the floor to make cleaning fast and easy. Remember this room sees a lot of traffic. 2. Install castors or wheels to the coffee table, ottomans and pieces of furniture that you need to move around. 3. Install drawers or baskets into the coffee table to house items that you need every day for example remote controls, TV guides and coasters. 4. Install shelving for books, games, DVDs and other dust gathering items. Bonus points for installing doors to the shelves. Take time to sort the books and DVDs to find your favorites quickly! If guests arrive, close the doors and the room will be instantly neat. 5. Use baskets (in the coffee table or shelving) to group common things together. This could be a box of candles, platters for snacks, toys, extra batteries, globes, or even your knitting. Now you only need to take one container out and have everything ready for a specific function. 6. Instead of hanging a lot of pictures in frames, opt for very narrow floating shelves do display your photos. Use these to display other items as well.

7. Use old crates (similar or various sizes) as wall mounted display shelves. To add extra depth to the room, install mirrors on the bottoms of the crates. 8. Lighting is very important in this room. Get rid of the single source of light in the center of the ceiling and install sets of lowvoltage LED down-lighters. Wire them to switch them on in sets: Switch all of them on when hosting a get together, but only one set when you watch TV. Not only will you save money, but flushmount down-lighters do not gather dust. 9. Use your wall space in a clever way. Install a large mirror on a wall to make the space look bigger. If you need extra light or lights that form part of the décor, cut an interesting shaped lamp in two and wall mount for both light and décor.

10. If you only use your TV occasionally, wall mount the unit and cover it with a framed picture that is hinged on one side. Neatly tie the cables together and hide them behind a vase, box or free-standing photo frame.

Chapter 3 – Bedroom Hacks A bedroom is a sanctuary and should be a private retreat for the individual, couple, or kids. Bedrooms are not only for sleeping though. Kids might use their bedrooms for studying or entertain visiting friends, you and your spouse might want to eat breakfast in the bedroom on a Sunday, or you might want to have a quiet spot in the house to read. Whatever the use, it should be a comfortable, stress-free space for every person. Some quick hacks to optimize your bedroom: 1. There should be no clutter in this room at all. Never use a bedroom as a storage space and get rid of anything that does not belong here. 2. Lighter colors on the walls, furniture, curtains and linen will make the space look bigger. 3. If you want a bright or bold color, accent one wall and match your linen and décor to the wall color. A riot of color is distracting and does not lend itself to tranquility. 4. Use the walls, where ever possible, for storage. Wall-mount the dressing table. A floating dressing table clears some floor space. Use an ottoman with storage space instead of a chair at the dressing table. 5. Design your dressing table around your appliances and needs. Mount a power station (multi-plug) in a drawer to hide loose wires for the hairdryer, curling tongs, rechargeable shavers etc. 6. If storage is a problem, get rid of your side tables and build low or medium chests-of-drawers. These are perfect for jewelry, underwear, tank-tops, shorts and t-shirts. Roll or fold the clothes to be visible from the top. You will save a lot of time by finding your clothes a lot quicker. Stacked clothing in a cupboard inevitably falls over and you waste a lot of space between the top of the stacks and the next shelf.

7. Be creative if you want side tables next to the bed – use a stack of books (with a tray in top), chairs (either standing on the floor or hangings from the wall), baskets, roman columns, drinks trollies, a bass drum (lying flat, and bonus points for converting the hi-hat into a lamp), trunks and even a slim bookcase can serve as a side table. 8. Use blinds instead of curtains for a modern look. Round off the window with crown molding in a box shape.

9. Light in the bedroom is critical. Make sure that you have ample light for the dressing table as well as a reading corner if you want one. Side lamps for the bed helps with reading as well as when you need to get up in the middle of the night. Make sure you choose the correct lamps for fit in with your décor as well as for their ultimate purpose. 10. Corners in a bedroom is a perfect place for a hanging lamp, hanging plants or just a thick dowel suspended on cables to hang your clothes for the next day. In winter, add a couple of dowels to hang your scarves and hats as an easy reach solution. 11. Make sure that you utilize the space under the bed for storing clothes or shoes that are out of season. 12. If you are in the market for a new bed, purchase one with storage space in the base of the bed. 13. To optimize the storage of clothes, place them in sturdy bags and use your vacuum cleaner to suck out the air. Seal the bag, and it will take up a fraction of the space and keep the clothes free from mold, insects and smells. Note: Zip-lock bags for this purpose are available in stores as well as online and they have

handy vacuum seals built into the sides. Use them in your suitcase as well to pack double the volume of clothes when travelling. 14. Use pool noodles or hollow core cardboard tubes in your boots to keep them upright and neat.

Chapter 4 – Kitchen Hacks A kitchen is the heart of any home. Most modern homes in cities have very small kitchens, so you have to really think about the space to optimize every available nook and cranny. A lot of work gets done in the kitchen and it should be ready at any time of the day. Everything that you do to make your life a little easier in this room will save you heaps of time and effort. Cooking only becomes a drag if you have to fight you way around the kitchen. Here are some simple and more involved things to make the kitchen a “healthy” heart of the home. 1. A fire blanket and/or fire extinguisher is a must in every kitchen. Make sure everybody in the house knows how to use them. 2. Because you are working with food and beverages the kitchen should always be clean. To make this possible, try to clear up as much counter space as possible. If an appliance is used only occasionally, pack it into the back of a cupboard or even in the pantry or attic. 3. Install electrical outlets under the top cupboards to get electrical cords out of the way. 4. You can change your kitchen as the seasons change – in the same way as you change your clothing cupboards. Replace the ice cream maker with the crockpot in winter, or swop your soup bowls for salad bowls in summer. Most of the time it is just a matter of repacking a cupboard. 5. Invest in covers for all your appliances that stand in the open. It will keep them clean, and if you make a mess in the kitchen it is easier to put the covers in the wash than to clean every appliance. 6. Most of the action takes place around the oven, stove or hob. Make sure that all the utensils, pots and pans are within easy reach so that you do not have to run around looking for things. 7. If you are considering remodeling your kitchen, opt for drawer units for all the floor-standing units. It is very difficult to find pack or clean things in floor cupboards. This is especially true for things that land up in the back. Drawers should pull out all the way so that you can see everything in once glance. The drawer

units work well if the sizes of the drawers are not all the same. Use pot drawers at the bottom for pots, mixing bowls, appliances and tall food ingredients. Use medium drawers for crockery, dinner service, condiments, glasses and cooking utensils. Use shallow drawers for cutlery, spices and cups. If you like baking, install 7 or 8 shallow drawers un the counter for all your baking tools, cookie cutters, pans, icing bits and pieces as well as all the food coloring, essence, palette knives and cake boards. By having a lot of shallow drawers nothing lies on top of each other and everything is visible when you need something.

8. Convert your kick plates under the cupboards to either drawers or boxes to stand on to reach the top cupboards. 9. Lift your dishwasher by 9 to 12 inches by placing it on a little cupboard with a single drawer. Store dishwashing soap, cleaning chemicals or rags in this drawer. By lifting the dishwasher, you will save your back when loading and unloading dishes. This is very important if you consider that the heaviest items are normally at the bottom of the appliance. 10. Some houses have a dining room next to the

kitchen. If you hardly ever use your dining room, break out the wall between the kitchen and dining room and enlarge your kitchen. You might even have space for a colorful couch in your new kitchen for your guests to relax on while you are preparing food.

Chapter 5 – Closet and Laundry hacks Closets are great for storage. Here are a few hacks to use the space in a clever way. 1. If you have fixed shelving in a closet, remove the shelving and either droll holes for shelving supports from the bottom to the top, or install metal shelving strips to make all the shelves adjustable. Most of the wasted space in a closet can be attributed to empty space between the top of items and the bottom of the next shelf. You might even be able to add a couple of shelves by going for an adjustable solution. (If you cannot match the old shelving, cover all the shelves with washable wall paper.) 2. You can also convert existing shelves into pull-out units so better access the items on the shelf. Cut off the edge of the shelves to accommodate the runners and add a narrow frame around the edges to prevent items from falling off. The frame will also give you a place to grip the shelf for pulling it out. 3. Install a slim bookcase in the center of a closet for racks and run rods between the bookcase and walls for hanging clothes. The rods will also help to stabilize the shelves. 4. If you need to store a lot of small items in a closet, group tem together in boxes, baskets of plastic containers. Not only will you find things quickly, but your closet will look organized. 5. Create extra space in your closets by installing rods on the inside of the doors. Use these to scarves, ties, hats, belts or any other slim items. Laundry rooms should be filled with clean smells, lots of light and with as many things as possible to make laundry day a breeze. 1. Build a closet next to or around your appliances. Use the closet to sore everything you might need in the laundry. Top shelves in the closet can also house extra linen for the house, tablecloths, napkins and even clothes that needs mending. 2. If you are building a closet, make a list of all the items that need to be stored. Remember to create a thin, but tall space for the ironing

board, broom and mops. Attach magnets on the corners of a quilted ironing board cover and frappe it over your drier for a quick place to iron a shirt or dress before you go out. No need to lug out the ironing board. Make your own reusable dryer sheets by combining 1/2 cup of vinegar and 8 drops tea tree or other essential oil. Cut up some old t-shirts or cotton cloth and sprinkle the mix over (do not soak). Store in an airtight mason jar. When needed remove from the jar, squeeze out over the jar and pop into the drier. When you are done, place at the bottom of the jar again. Install a shelf over the drier. Not only is it a place for storage, bit you can suspend a rod from the bottom of the shelf to store extra hangers, or to hang up clothes as you take them out of the drier. A dirty washing machine cannot clean your clothes. Clean your washing machine by running a hot water cycle with 2 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda in the drum. Remember to remove the soap dispenser and give it a good scrub with an old toothbrush. While you are cleaning the machine check and clean all the filters as well. Repeat this at least twice a year to keep your machine running optimally. Lift your front loading washing machine and drier about 12 inches from the floor by building a sturdy wooden box for them to stand on. This will make loading and unloading easy on your back, and you can use the space below them for storage baskets to store any of the many things you need in a laundry. Suspend an old single bed metal frame or even an old ladder from the ceiling to give you space to hook your hangers when removing clothes from the drier. Wash soft toys in your machine by putting them in lingerie bags. Remember to check that the eyes and other parts are still secure after washing. Note: this works for plastic toys like Lego as well. 10. If you are spending a lot of time in the laundry, invest in a portable music player or radio to give yourself something to listen to other than the washer and drier.

Chapter 6 – Office Hacks Your office is your second home. Follow these tips and hacks to help you be more productive while working. 1. Cover your desk with white paper and install a sheet of class to fit the dimensions. You have an instant white board to taking notes while on the phone, do some planning, keeping tabs on jobs or playing noughts and crosses with your colleagues. 2. To get to important things fast, remember to put things that you use frequently in the top drawer on the side of your dominant hand. 3. If you are drowning in paper, scan the important documents and save it to your hard drive. Shred the paper while you make a backup of your hard drive. 4. Install cable tracks under your desk to get rid of unsightly wires. For a cheaper option place a rubber band around the cables and hook into cup hooks at the back of your desk. 5. Use a sticky note to clean between the keys of your keyboard. Simply cut it into the desired size and rung the glue part between the keys. 6. Use an old rotating spice rack to store small office supplies neatly. Paperclips, staples, thumbtacks and small binder clips all fit neatly onto these bottles. 7. Cover old metal filing cabinets with wallpaper. It will brighten the office, and will be a lot cheaper than replacing the cabinets. 8. The plastic pins on in-trays are prone to breaking. Solve this problem permanently by using threaded steel rods and nuts. You can now stack up to 7 trays on top of each other, and the height for each tray is adjustable. To make one stack, you will need 4 rods and 8 nuts for each tray. The tray rests on 4 nuts, and it tightened down by 4 more. To help position the trays accurately, mark the rods with a black marker. 9. Get rid of loose papers on or around your desk by hanging clipboards on the wall. This will keep things that belong together in one place, and it is easy to grab it when you go to a meeting. 10. Pegboards are not just for the workshop. Paint a

large pegboard a vibrant color and install behind your monitor. Use everything from binder clips to paperclips to hang your stationary and office supplies neatly off your desk. You can also use old picture frames to frame pieces of pegboard for a storage solutions that doubles as office art. Mount these on the wall. 11. Wire dis hacks can serve an in-tray as well as a filing sorter (where the plates normally go). Use the cutlery driptray as a penholder. 12. Add castors to filing cabinets copy machines and other heavy items to make cleaning a breeze!

Chapter 7 – Household hacks to increase productivity Are you always running around the house looking for things? Do you spend too much time on tasks that should have been quick and simple? Here are a couple of hacks to get you on track. 1. De-clutter your house to turn it into a home. Cleaning will be faster and cheaper and you will save mountains of money by finding stuff and not replacing them. 2. A place for everything and everything in its place. It sounds simple, but it is difficult to follow unless you are disciplined. This is a vital rule if you share your living space with your family or even just a roommate. Teaching your children to obey this rule will help them in life when they eventually leave the house. If you make a habit of hanging up the keys when you enter the house, the keys will never go missing again. The same goes with the exact spot where you store the milk in the fridge. You can reach for it without looking. If you can locate any item in your house blindfolded, you have a sorted and productive life. 3. Just get started. It is more difficult to start on a project than it is to actually do it. 4. Do the horrible or difficult tasks first. Once they are out of the way, the easier and nice tasks will go a lot quicker. 5. Use the two-minute-rule. If you are busy with something and another tasks comes up (e.g. an email) ask yourself if you can complete the new task in two minutes. If you can, do it and get it out of your mind, otherwise adding it to your to-do list, worrying about it and eventually doing it will take double the time of the original two minutes. 6. Do similar things in batches. If you need to make a number of phone calls a day, do them all together. If you need to clean the house, do all the wood finishes in one go This means you do not have to lug the whole cleaning cart everywhere. If you need to wash one floor, you might as well wash them all because you have the bucket, mop soap and everything ready anyway.

7. Plan your meals for the whole week and shop accordingly. This will save time and money. 8. You can also plan your outfits for the week on a Sunday evening. Just hang your planned outfits, in order, in your closet. 9. Take breaks. You cannot be 100% productive all the time. 10. Make sure you get enough sleep. You cannot expect to be productive if you are tired or lethargic. 11. Get the whole family involved in tasks around the house. If every person is doing a little bit, the quicker the work gets done. 12. Cook your meals in bulk. Use the leftovers for another meal of for lunch the next day. That means half the dishes and no cooking the next day. If you make a soup, make five. Freeze the rest for an instant meal.

Chapter 6 – How to organize your home without going insane Organizing your home saves you valuable time and effort, as you will find things quickly. Keeping your home organized will take some discipline especially if you share your home with family. You can turn this into a positive by instilling chores and house rules from an early stage. Organizing your home can be accomplished in three steps. Step 1 – A moving experience. 1. Get a box ready for each room. Go through each room and open all the cupboards and drawers and take stock of everything you see. Decide where each item belongs and move it to the appropriate box. For example, you find CDs and tapes in your bedroom. These belong in the family room and you either move it there or pack it into the family room box. While you are packing you must decide whether you will ever need an item again. Let us assume that you decided that you are never going to use the tapes again. Either trash the tapes or put it in a donation box. But get it out of your life immediately. 2. You might find your father’s old guitar in the study, and you kept it as a keepsake. Why not move it into your bar area and mount it on the wall? You will free up some space as well as create a conversation piece. Step 2 – Sorting 1. Start with one room at a time. 2. Be ruthless. If you never use something get rid of it. Somebody might want it or of it is trash put it in the bin. 3. Put like things together. Once you see the pile of art and craft material find a box to put it all together. 4. Once everything is sorted, clean all the cupboards and drawers and start packing things away. Use shoeboxes, ice cream containers, cereal boxes or paper boxes to keep things together. Mark each box with a permanent marker for easy reference.

5. Make sure everything you pack away is in good working or useable order. It doesn’t help to store dried up paint or broken staplers. Step 3 – Keeping it sorted 1. Over time you might want to invest in proper containers for the things you need. This should be a long-term investment. 2. Our lives change constantly, so will our needs. If you start sewing as a hobby, start a new box or shelf in the cupboard and keep all your sewing things together. 3. If you take a box out to do some arts or crafts, pack it back when you are done. Your living space will stay neat. Organizing hacks 1. Store your flat sheet, fitted sheet, night frill, duvet cover and pillow cases in one pillow case from the set. It is easy to grab the right set and it stays organized. 2. Short PVC pipes (2-3 inches long) in a drawer make perfect holes for scarves, watches, belts, underwear and ties. Use various sizes of you need to. 3. Add shelving, hooks, strings, chains or small baskets in the inside of cupboard doors for extra storage. 4. Use ice cube trays to sort jewelry, office stationary like pins, buttons, beads or any other small item. Use plastic wrap to close it if you are worried that the contents might fall out. 5. Use old VHS tape covers to sore small items. Most of have sleeves around the box. Remove and print your own sleeve to identify the contents. These are rigid, so you can mount them on a wall or even on the inside of closets. 6. Sore cutlery and other silverware vertically in a deep drawer. 7. The space behind a door is dead space. Use clear plastic shoe organizers behind every door in the house. It is great for extra cleaning stuff in the laundry, toys for kids in the bedroom, rolled up magazines in the living room and even extra towels, soap, toilet paper and facecloths. 8. Store things close to where they will be used. Pots close to the

stove, books close to your favorite reading spot. 9. Kindles, tablets and mobile phones need to be charged regularly. Create a charging station in a central part of the house. In the hour or two it takes to charge, switch the devices off and just spend time with loved ones without interruptions. It is a good time to enjoy dinner as a family. 10. Sometimes it is difficult to throw out clothing. Start by hooking all your hangers the wrong way round on the rods. As you wear the clothes turn them the right way around. At the end of the season you quickly see the items you did not wear all season. Time to donate them to your favorite charity. 11. While you are busy in your closet, double your hanging space by adding another rod under the existing one. Space it so that tops, blouses, shirts and short jackets will fit over the new rod. In some cases it might be necessary to move the top rod a little higher.

Make cleanliness a Habit A clean house is more than just dust-free rooms and wiped surfaces. A clean house is also a house free of clutter and where everything is sorted so that you can find what you are looking for without searching for hours. We are all creatures of habit and maintaining a clean house is a habit that can be learned. Children that grow up in a clean house are far more likely to have a clean house of their own one day. It is therefore very important to install cleanliness in your children from an early age. Cleanliness is a group effort. Every person in the household must contribute to the best of their abilities. Even young children can be pulled in to help around the house, even if it is only in their own bedrooms and bathrooms. Keep in mind that young children should never use cleaning agents and other chemicals used in cleaning. They can, however, pick up toys and clothes and

leave the bathroom neat. Children should also make their own beds from an early age.
