the 1857 Jacques Carter Market Hall by Luc Noppen, Claude Paulette, and Michel Tremblay, Quebec: trois siecks d'architecture (Quebec: Libre expression 1979), 317. This attribution is based on the fact that a twostorey market hall was erected at the Jacques-Cartier Market, that the corner visible in a later photograph appears similar to this design (insofar as one can see it), and that one of the drawings has written on the backing "set of plans market hall Jac Cart C. Baillarge [sic] before 1866," not in Baillairge's handwriting. What the authors failed to see was the inscription "C. Baillairge studens" on the front of each sheet of the plans. Charles Baillairge s son, Charles, was only five years old in 1857, so he could not be the "studens" in question. Moreover, in a contemporary newspaper report about the new Jacques Carrier Market Hall, it is stated that "le plan est de M. Theophile Baillairge, inspecteur des chemins" (Le Canadien, 23 July 1857, 4). In support of the 1845 date is the close stylistic similarity to the episcopal palace of the same period and the survival of an isolated foundation drawing clearly identified for the Saint Paul Market and signed "1845 Invt. Delt. C. Baillairge." AVQ, fonds Charles Baillairge, no. 6-48.

16 An examination of the role of architects from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries in Quebec, including that of Thomas Baillairge, is found in Ramsay Traquair, The Old Architecture of Quebec (Toronto: Macmillan Company of Canada 1947), 93-4. In his Maitres artisans de chez nous (Montreal: Les editions du Zodiaque 1942), 55, Marius Barbeau places the decline of skilled craftsmanship in Quebec at about 1840. 17 Baillairge had at least three apprentices in his office in 1849, as these legal contracts prove: ANQ, gr. Edward Cannon, no. 379, indentures, Charles Larue-Charles Baillairge, Quebec, 21 March 1849; no. 408, indentures, Laughlin Smith-Charles Baillairge, 24 April 1849; no. 525, indentures, Eugene Larue-Charles Baillairge, Quebec, 21 Nov. 1849. The apprentices paid £20 or £25 and pledged to act "in a decent and becoming manner as an apprentice to any liberal profession ought to do"; Baillairge undertook to instruct them and issued certificates at the end of their training. It was Eugene Larue who drew the plan for Bilodeau's store. CHAPTER 3 1 For the identification of buildings and their cost, see Appendix i, summary catalogue of architectural works by Charles Baillairge. Although the catalogue of architectural works is as complete a list as current research permits and provides a valid basis for the evaluation of his work, it should be kept in mind that the true extent of Charles Baillairge's practice is revealed in his 1853 letter to Chabot in which he claims by that date to have designed and supervised over sixty houses, shops, warehouses, churches, and presbyteries. NA, RG n, vol. 19, no. 19,850, letter from Charles Baillairge to Hon. Jean Chabot, Quebec, 7 Jan. 1853. 2 These observations are based on general knowledge of building in Quebec City acquired through work as a team member for AJ.H. Richardson's work on Old Quebec for the Canadian Inventory of Historic Building from 1970 to 1975 and on a general impression acquired through reading Le Canadien from 1846 to 1860, inclusive. 3 Jean Hamelin and Yves Roby, Histoire economiaue du Quebec 1851-1896 (Montreal: Fides 1971), 77-84; Albert Faucher, Quebec en ameriaue au XIXe siecle: essai sur ks caracteres economiques de la laurentie (Montreal: Fides 1973), 70-2; Narcisse Rosa, La construction des navires a Quebec et ses environs, greves et naufrages (Quebec: Imprimerie Leger Brousseau 1897), 14 4 The drawing, showing two sections for the church, is illustrated in C. Baillairge arct. ing. dessins architecturaux (Quebec: Ministere des Affaires culturelles 1979) 19. The 1846 date seems to be erroneous since the drawing clearly belongs to a set dated 1847 and since the purchase of a site for the church did not occur until August 1846.
