NOTE Complete sets of parts i- viii of this Catalogue in the original 'edition have become difficult and expensive to acquire, and the present photolithographic reprint is intended to make these volumes generally available at a low price. The opportunity has been taken to reproduce the Museum's working copy, which contains numerous manuscript additions and corrections by various hands, the majority being by Dr. Victor Scholderer. Except that a few duplicates have been entered, these annotations do not record later acquisitions, which will be dealt with in the volume of this Catalogue which is to follow Spain an~ England. Both text and facsimiles remain unaltered in size, but the paper-~ has been slightly increased to allow for re-binding. R. A. WILSON October, I962

Principal Keeper of Printed Books

NOTE I T is not possible to arrive at an exact estimate of the number of books printed in Europe with movable types during the fifteenth century. Down to the present time between twenty-four and twenty-five thousand of these have been described, but books hitherto unidentified continue from time to time to come to light, and it is by no means improbable that the total number extant may be about thirty thousand. The British Museum Library contains (exclusive of duplicates) over nine thousand incunabula. 1'he value of the collection, however, should not be estimated merely by numbers. By far the most valuable and interesting examples are those produced comparatively soon after the invention of printing; and the Library is, fortunately, far richer in the works of the earliest printers than in those of their successors. Thus, out of some hundred and fifteen books attributed to Fust and Schaeffer, copies of seventy-eight are in the British Museum; of about one hundred and sixteen by the three earliest printers at Strassburg, no fewer than one hundred and two are here; and of one hundred and seventy-seven books printed at Cologne by Ulrich Zel the Museum possesses one hundred and twenty-three. On the other hand, there are only one hundred and sixty-seven of the productions of that prolific, but late and not specially interesting, printer, Heinrich Quentell of Cologne, who is known to have issued over four hundred books. The entire collection has been systematically arranged under the name of each country, town, and printer, in chronological order. It occupies fifty-seven large glazed presses, space being allowed for further expansion. The arduous work of cataloguing the collection has been entrusted to Mr. A. W. Pollard, who has had the assistance of two other members of the staff of the Department of Printed Books, Mr. A. ]. K. Esdaile and Mr. ]. V. Scholderer. The present issue forms Part I of the Catalogue and deals with the Blockbooks and woodcut single sheets, as well as with the books printed at Mainz, Strassburg, Bamberg, and Cologne. Part II will complete the descriptions of the German Series. Parts III and IV will be devoted to the works of Italian printers, and Parts V and VI, completing the Catalogue, to those of France, England, and other countries. Part VI will also contain a general index to the entire work.

INTRODUCTION § 1. THE present Catalogue is based on the arrangement of the Incunabula in the British Museum planned and in great part carried out by the late Robert Proctor, and completed from his notes after his death. The arrangement itself was founded on ~he unofficial' Index to the Early Printed Books in the British Museum, with Notes of those in the Bodleian Library', published by Proctor in 18 98 (Kegan Paul, Trench & Co.-now out of print), a work which was speedily recognized by students of early printed books all over Europe as putting the study of incunabula on a new footing. For the present detailed Catalogue, produced under much more favourable conditions, every argunlent and conclusion in the 'Index' is being carefully tested, and as much new light as possible is brought to bear on each printerts work. In the process, many of Proctor's conclusions have been modified, and some errors, due to the speed at which he worked, corrected. It is the more necessary, therefore, at the outset, to point out not only how largely the present Catalogue is indebted to his work, but also how remarkable this work was. Proctor had two chief predecessors ill his method and aims, Georg Wolfgang Panzer and Henry Bradshaw. The' Annales Typographici ' of Panzer, 'the one true naturalist among general bibliographers,' as he was justly called by Bradshaw, was begun in 1793, exactly a hundred years before Proctor entered the British Museum, and finished in 1803, exactly a hundred years before Proctor's death. The work is in two sections, the first embracing the period from the invention of printing to the end of the fifteenth century, the second from the beginning of ISO I to the close of the year 1535. Panzer had borrowed his title' Annales Typographici' from his predecessor Michel Maittaire, whose method had, indeed, been whole-heartedlyannalistic. Maittaire divided his subject into decades or half-decades, prefaced each period with an introduction embracing some notice of the printers who began work in it, and then set down the short titles of the dated books printed during each year, arranging those of the same year in some kind of a class order, which began with Bibles and the works of the Fathers, but whose further ramifications are not very easy to follow. A few undated books were noted incidentally. The arrangement attempted to keep an eye on the whole of Europe simultaneously, and was only possible because Maittaire, writing in 1719, knew but a very small proportion of the books. Panzer, as his title indicates, kept to Maittaire's arrangement by years, but instead of the whole of Europe he took individual towns as his units, and in recording a town's output for each year kept together the work of each printer and marshalled the printers in the order of their seniority, so that all the books from the same press are found together at the same point in the successive lists, and it is thus easy to follow the career of a printer from one year to another. Panzer did more than this, as may be seen from a glance through his heading 'Argentorati' (Strassburg). Not only did he identify by their types many of the unsigned books of Mentelin, Eggestein, H usner, and Flach, but even when he could not suggest the name of any printer as their author he grouped together books which seemed to him to be printed in the same types. Panzer's titles are longer and more accurate than those of Maittaire, but his object was to further the history of printing rather than to offer owners and booksellers any help in identifying editions, or determining how many leaves a perfect copy should possess. This work was admirably done (1826-1838) by the' Repertorium BibIiographicum' of Ludwig Hain. Arranged under the names of authors, this describes over 16,000 fifteenth-century books. The bulk of these descriptions b ix

INTRODUCTION (all those marked *) were written by Hain himself from the books under his charge at Munich, and the fullness and accuracy of these asterisked entries have won the admiration of all subsequent bibliographers. Unfortunately, Hain died in 1836, before his 'Repertorium' was completed, and a mere alph abetical list of fifteenth-century printers took the place of the full typographical index which he would doubtless have added had he lived. The success of Hain's ' Repertoriun1 ' in this incomplete form threw Panzer's' Annales' somewhat into the shade, but in the sixties three men, William Blades, J. W. Holtrop, and Henry Bradshaw, who worked much together, developed and extended his method with remarkable success. William Blades's great work, 'The Life and Typography of William Caxton,' published in 1861-3, was the first conspicuous example of the application of the' natural history method' in a monograph on a great printer. I-Ioltrop's ' Monumens typographiques des Pays-Bas au quinzieme siecle' (1868) put the study of the incunabula of the Low Countries on a firm basis by its wealth of facsimiles. Henry Bradshaw produced no work which could compete in size or immediate importance with either of these. In bibliography, as in other subjects, his part was that of a master of method, an inspirer of other men's work, and it was only in Proctor's Index that his devotion to the study of fifteenthcentury books yielded its harvest. His own output was restricted to a few thin pamphlets on early printing, issued during his life in limited editions as ' Memorandums " afterwards published together with similar contributions to other subjects among his' Collected Papers' (1889). The first of these memorandums, published in February 1868, was devoted to the work of a single anonymous firm at Cologne, the' Printer of the Historia Sancti Albani '. Memorandum no. 2, published in April 1870, contained' A Classified Index of the F ifteenth-Century Books in the D e Meyer Collection sold at Ghent, November 1869', the classification being by towns in the order in which printing was introduced into them, by printers in the order in which they began to print, and by books in the published or ascertained dates of their appearance. Memorandum no. 3, published in June 1871, gave a ' List of the Founts of Type and Woodcut Devices used by Printers in Holland in the Fifteenth Century'. Robert Proctor's achievement was the application of the principles and nlethods of these three memorandums to the whole field of European printing. Quarto. [alO b 8 A B ~ C12.] 46 leaves. Type-page very varying in part i. 111: 40 lines of text, 240 mm.; with side- and foot-notes, 263 x 202 mm. Ib: 44 lines of text, 262 mm. ; with side- and footnotes, 285 x 195 mm. In part ii: 1911 : 52 lines, 239 x 152 mm. One- to six-line spaces left for capitals. Types: 118, text of part i; 9J, notes, with 234 for grammatical terminations; 92, text of part ii. Part i has six pinholes, part ii two only, and these in mid margin. It is not at all clear that the two parts of this work should be treated as forming a single book rather than separately. Part i ends with a verse colophon and blank leaf, and is on differ nt paper from part ii, the opening words of which, moreover, seem to allude to it as a separate work. The paper in part i may intentionally have been made thicker than the rest because it wa more likely to be thumbed, and the words 'superioribus nuper diebus' with which part ii opens may possibly refer only to the circulation of this part in manuscript. On the other hand the 92 type in which part ii is printed does not appear again in any book in the Museum collectlOn till the ConstitutlOns of Clement V, finished 13 August, 147 I, and the use of two pinholes in mid m rgin points to a date slightly later still. The type in part i is unusually heavily printed, and the paper does not appear to have shrunk at all after being wetted. The measurement of 20 lines of type 118 is thus 2 mm. more than usual. sumatu p Petru II schoiffer de gernphem i ciuitate nobili Mogii~lItina. < .. t;, the first volume of a copy of the 49-line Bible at Freiburg is dated by the rubricator 1460; the second, ~ ih~~~ ~146I. According to ]. P. de Lignamine's Chronica Summorum Pontificum (Rome, 1474, leaf 121 b) Mentelin was D} M~ ~~~ 'printing 300 sheets a day as early as 145 8. He died 12 December, 147 8. ~ ~~. TYPES (see Plate IV): JI8 [Po I], large text type, with cursive a. Used in the 49-line Bible (T. F. S. 00 1 1I1l_ ~ ~ c • , 9 . c.). G~ '~="~rAu ~U\I.WI 1Z1 [Po 4], heavy faced type used for headings, roman a. This and not, as stated by Proctor, II2B (P. 2&) is the ut. lAI6\"11"'l type used for the headings in Chrysostom's Homiliae super Matthaeum (lB. 504). Taking the types in the order in I which they come in the books, according to Proctor's arrangement, this makes the sequence P. 1 (118), P. 4 (121), P.3 (9ZA), P. 2b (IIZA), P. 2a (11ZB). But it is possible that l1Z\ which has a cursive a, should precede 121 and 9 2A, which have a. ~, 9ZA [Po 3], small text type, roman a. ~ ,t/~1*7'l~,?6Cd.l~~.1cLA~Mcr 112A [Po 2b ], not reproduced, id.entical with lI2B,'but with cursive a instead of roman. Found only in the \ Q.~, di~aM~ ~ ~ 1M l. British Museum collection in the Augustinus de ciuitate Dei [n. a. 1468], and the headings of the second edition of the De arte praedicandi. l1ZD [Po 211] , text type, roman a. See notes to 121 and IIZA. . 92D [Po 5], small text type. In the minuscules the face is much larger than in 92A, but the majuscules are the same. Leaded to lIZ in the Aristotle (lB. 573) and Isidorus (IC. 586). IJ2 C fP. 6], rounder and more roman in appearance than 1I2A, I12B. 107 ~I>. 7], majuscules only for use in headings, instead of the heavy minuscules of J 21 [Po 4] ; cast to go with 107 [Po 8 , but found also cut down to 92 to go with 9 ZB [Po 5]. 107 P. 8], a lighter substitute for I12 c , still more roman in character.

Signatures are stamped, as in I C. 547 and 568, on the extreme edge of th lower margin, but at varying distances from the text; the book was printed in four sections, containing A-E, F-M , N - R, S- 2, and the 5\leets in the.se. sec tion ~ are ~ tampe~ El, .b, c, or d respectively. Cf. Blades, Blbltographlcal Mlscellames, I. p. 20. A fragment in the B ibl, iotheque Nat ional~ at Paris, containing the lower half of an advertisement by Mentehn, reads as follows: 'Cupiens igitur pretactum volumen emere una cum ceteri s subscriptis bene emendat is, veniat ad hospicium infra notatum, et habebit largum ve nditorem. Item Speculum historiale Vencencii. Item Summam Astaxani. Item Archidyaconum, super decretis. Item Ysidorum, Ethimologiarum .' The first and second of the books prev iously published, the ' Speculum H istoriale' and.' Su~~a Astexani " and th e 'pr~scnt edition of the' Concordantlae Blbhorum' share the pecuharltyof having the stamped signatures described above. It is certain, therefore that they must have been printed about th e same time. As the' Concordantiae Biblio.rum' is not mentioned along with the other two as previously published, there would seem to be R. high probability that this is the work specially advertised in the first part of the sheet. This probability is converted into practical certainty by the fact that ~t is on ~he ~ack of a copy of leaf 162 of this book that the adverti sement IS prmted. A copy of this book was given by Mentelin to the Carthusian monas tery near Strassburg.

This loss of thickness has naturally been accompanied by lateral expansion.

Three- to seven-line spaces for capitals. Hain .41°3. This, like some other books by the R-printer, appears to have been set up in seven sections, and the compositors clearly had great difficulty in keeping to the number of leaves assigned to them. In the last qUIres (f m s M) of four of the sections space was very limited, and in order to economize extra lines were added to some of the pages, and contractions used wherever possible, over 300 being used on 56 b , the end of the first section, as against fewer than 70 on 57 111 , which begins the second. In quire G, on the other hand, the compositor, having more space than he needed, reduced the number of lines on some pages, uses contractions only when needed for th e spacing of individual lines, and in the end has a blank of more than hal( a page, which obliges him to resort to the catchwords, , sequitur scipio quoqJ,' to show that there is no break in the text.

This copy, if it possessed the two blanks, would contain 396 leaves, viz. 214 in Part I, 182 in Part II. The copies described by Rain and MIle Pellechet are said to contain the same number of leaves (396), but have 218 instead of 214 in Part I. On examination the present copy appears to have lost, after fo1. 94, matter equivalent to four leaves, from the middle of the article' Belus' down to that on ' Bullor '. This would raise its total for Part I to the 218 leaves described by Rain and Mlle Pellechet, but as it possesses (adding in the final blank) 182 leaves in Part II it would appear that the total number in the book must be 400, not 396. The arrangement of the last three quires is uncertain, owing to their having been tampered with when the book was rebound.
