Notes on Use A. Purpose and Function The Canadian Biographical Index (CaBI), provides, in a readily accessible form, a summary of the information contained about more than 90,000 persons featured in the Canadian Biographical Archive (CaBA). Completed in 2003, CaBA is a cumulation of 162 biographical reference works (together 186 volumes), published between 1848 and 1997, reproduced in a single alphabetical sequence on 421 microfiches. An index entry for every individual listed in CaBA has been compiled and captured electronically, and the resultant database published in two hardcover volumes. CaBI serves a dual function: 1. It is an index to CaBA. The user can tell at a glance whether or not any particular individual appears in the Archive, and if so where the information is to be found. 2. It is an independent research tool. The basic biographical data provided by each entry will almost always suffice for purposes of identification, and if further information is required the user is directed to the original source-work(s) from which the entry has been compiled.

B. Content of Entries Main entries in CaBI contain the following categories of information: 1. Full name (or fullest-known form). This includes aristocratic or other titles, as well as epithets integral to the name itself. 2. Other name-forms (if any). This category includes variant spellings, of particular significance in early material concerning the French aristocracy. Other types of alternative name are those adopted or conferred, such as pseudonyms and nicknames, and married surnames. 3. Date(s). Years of birth and/or death are given where known; otherwise the period of the subject's activity is indicated by a single date, range of dates or chronological phrase, such as "early 19th century", according to the available information. Exceptions to this rule are entries for family groups, and for a very few individuals for whom even a meaningful guess has been impossible. 4. Occupations(s). Each entry gives one or more terms designed to reflect as fully and accurately as possible the activities of the subject as described in CaBA. Public and/or political office is also indicated, with only the most advanced position cited in the case of one who held a series of such positions. In some cases, the term chosen is not properly an occupation, but rather the reason why the person is cited, e. g. "Centenarian" or "Murder victim". 5. Source(s). Every entry cites all the original reference works in which information on the subject appears. In a great many instances this is only one work, but for the most celebrated lives there will be several. A list of all 162 source works with their abbreviations can be found on the following pages. 6. Location(s). At the end of each entry are figures indicating the exact location(s) on the CaBA microfiches where the subject's life is documented. Fiche numbers are followed by a comma and the frame number(s). Where articles appear on more than one fiche, separate locations are divided by a semi-colon.

C. Cross-references In addition to some 90,000 main entries, CaBI contains in the region of 7,100 cross-references. These fall into six main categories:

1. From a variant spelling to the main form, e.g. Lemoyne -» Lemoine. 2. From a woman's married name to her maiden name, or vice versa, depending on the best-known form, e. g. Guion, Elisabeth Boucher, Elisabeth. 3. From a pseudonym to the real name, e.g. Black Dick -» Pierpont, Richard 4. From the real name to an alternative name, where the alternative name is the best-known form, e.g. Ta-tanka Iyotank Sitting Bull 5. From a double-barrelled surname to the last part, e.g. Hunter-Duvar, John -> Duvar, John Hunter 6. From an aristocratic title to the family name, e.g. Huntingdon, Selina, Countess of, -» Shirley, Selina, Countess of Huntingdon

D. Arrangement of Entries Main entries and cross-references are arranged in a single alphabetical sequence, generally though not invariably corresponding to the order of CaBA, with initials and other abbreviated forms placed at the beginning. Within sequences of the same name shared by different individuals, the arrangement is as follows: 1. personal name, neither surname nor forename, e.g. Red Cloud 2. general entries for entire families, royal dynasties, etc. or surname without forename(s) 3. surname with forename(s) Within each of these sections, arrangement is chronological by available date information. Certain elements within the name category are ignored: 1. Prefixes, e. g. Sir 2. Link words, e. g. of 3. Non-geographical epithets, e. g. the Younger, Earl of Three further points should be made concerning the arrangement of entries: 1. Compound surnames used as ordering points (usually crossreferences to the last element) are arranged as though written as one word, while personal names consisting of two or more words are arranged word by word. 2. Cross-references do not give dates of any kind and therefore precede main entries for persons of exactly the same name. 3. Surnames beginning with M', Mac and Mc are ordered in one sequence under the spelling Mac.

E. Relationship with CaBA 1. Placing of entries. The placing of main entries follows the form of heading chosen for the Archives. The editorial principles applied may be summarized as follows: a) Members of royalty are filed at their given name as distinct from title. b) Members of aristocracy are filed at their surname. c) Compound surnames are filed at the last element, excepting those which are non-English language in origin. d) Married women and the bearers of pseudonyms are filed at the best-known form of their name. 2. Completeness of information. Where possible, standard reference works such as the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and the British Dictionary of National Biography were used as authorities for the names and dates of persons featured in the Archive, and those details have been transferred

to the Index. Generally speaking, however, the quality of information presented reflects the nature and limitations of the source works reproduced in CaBA, rather than the sum of current knowledge. This applies particularly to lesser known individuals described only in local and contemporary accounts. It should also be borne in mind where the Archive seemingly perpetuates old opinions and prejudices since revised or overthrown. 3. Fiche/frame locations. Since the location references given in the Index are precise and comprehensive, the user can turn directly to the appropriate frame(s) in the Archive without needing to unravel the logic of the sequence. The vast majority of references give the location of articles devoted to the subject and ordered under his/her name. However, a small percentage lead to information embedded in articles primarily concerned with someone else and therefore ordered under a different name. In these cases the frame numbers cited are those of the entire article, not just the frames relevant to the person in question.

F. Abbreviations A number of abbreviations are regularly employed in connexion with names, dates and occupations. The most important of these are as follows: a. also aft. afterwards c. [before dates] circa (about)

G. Conclusion Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the Canadian Biographical Index, it is inevitable that in a work of this size and scope errors, omissions and inconsistencies will occasionally occur. Contenu et fonction L'Index Biographique Canadien (CaBI) présente, sous une forme d'accès facile, un aperçu global des informations sur plus de 90000 personnes citées dans les Archives Biographiques Canadiennes (CaBA). Achevé en 2003, CaBA cumule 162 ouvrages de référence biographique (en tout 186 volumes) publiés entre 1848 et 1997 et reproduit, dans un ordre alphabétique, les biographies de ces ouvrages sur 421 microfiches. Toutes les biographies des personnes cités dans CaBA ont été indexées et les informations réunies dans une banque de données électronique, à partir de laquelle le présent Index en deux volumes a été réalisé. Ainsi l'Index CaBI remplit deux fonctions: 1. C'est un index des Archives Biographiques Canadiennes qui permet à l'utilisateur de se renseigner rapidement sur la présence ou non de la personne recherchée dans CaBA, et de situer les informations sur chaque personne à l'intérieur des Archives. 2. C'est aussi un outil de recherche indépendant. Les données biographiques contenues sous chaque entrée permettent, dans la majorité des cas, une identification univoque de la personne recherchée. Pour une information complémentaire, l'Index renvoie l'utilisateur à la source dont sont issues les informations contenues sous chaque entrée.

6. Position(s). À la fin de chaque entrée est indiquée la position exacte dans les microfiches de CaBA où la personne est mentionnée. Le numéro de fiche est suivit d'une virgule et du numéro de vue sur la fiche. Lorsque des articles sur une personne sont situés sur plus d'une seule fiche, les différentes positions sont séparées d'un point virgule.

C. Renvois En plus des quelques 90 000 entrées principales, CaBI contient environ 7 100 renvois. Ces renvois peuvent être divisés en six catégories: 1. Renvoi d'une variante orthographique à la variante principale, ex.: Lemoyne Lemoine. 2. Renvoi d'un nom d'épouse au nom de jeune fille ou inversement - selon le nom le plus connu - ex.: Guión, Élisabeth Boucher, Élisabeth. 3. Renvoi d'un pseudonyme au nom civil, ex.: Black Dick —> Pierpont, Richard. 4. Renvoi du nom civil à la variante, lorsque celle-ci est la plus connue, ex.: Ta-tanka I-yotank -» Sitting Bull. 5. Renvoi d'un nom composé au deuxième élément de ce nom, ex.: Hunter-Duvar, John -> Duvar, John Hunter. 6. Renvoi d'un titre de noblesse au nom de famille, ex.: Huntingdon, Selina. Countess of -> Shirley, Selina, Countess of Huntingdon.

B. Contenu des entrées Les entrées principales de CaBI se composent des catégories suivantes: 1. Nom intégral (ou forme intégrale du nom connue). Sont inclus dans cette catégorie les titres de noblesse et autres titres, ainsi que les épithètes faisant partie du nom. 2. Autres variantes du nom (s'il y en a). Sont inclues les variantes orthographiques - significatives pour les sources anciennes concernant la noblesse française - , ainsi que les variantes du nom adoptées ou conférées, tels que pseudonymes, surnoms et noms d'épouse. 3. Date(s). Les dates de naissance et de décès sont indiquées dans la mesure du possible. Lorsqu'elles sont inconnues, l'époque à laquelle la personne a agit est signalée, selon les informations disponibles, soit par une date précise, soit par une période de temps ou une indication temporelle approximative (ex.: « early 19th century »). Une exception constituent les entrées concernant une famille, ou quelques rares personnes pour lesquelles aucune date, même approximative, n'est mentionnée. 4. Profession(s). Chaque entrée mentionne une ou plusieurs professions afin de rendre le plus précisément et intégralement possible l'activité de la personne décrite dans CaBA. Les fonctions publiques et / ou politiques sont également indiquées: lorsqu'une personne a exercé plusieurs fonctions de ce type, seule la fonction de rang supérieur est indiquée. Dans certains cas, le terme choisit n'indique pas à proprement parler une profession, mais plutôt la raison pour laquelle la personne a été citée (ex.: « centenarian » ou « murder victim »). 5. Source(s). Sous chaque entrée sont mentionnés toutes les sources dont sont issues les informations sur la personne concernée. Dans la plupart des cas, il s'agit d'une seule source, mais en particulier pour les personnages célèbres plusieurs sources peuvent être mentionnées. Une liste des 162 sources, dans l'ordre alphabétique des abréviations utilisées dans l'Index, se trouve dans les pages suivantes.

D. Critères de classement Les entrées principales et les renvois sont classés par ordre alphabétique, même dans les cas où cet ordre ne correspond pas au classement des Archives. Les initiales et les noms abrégés sont placés au début de chaque lettre. Dans les cas où un même nom désigne plusieurs personnes, le classement a été fait comme suit: 1. Nom individuel (sans surnom ou prénom), ex.: Red Cloud. 2. Entrées concernant une famille, une dynastie royale, etc. ou nom de famille sans prénom(s). 3. Nom de famille avec prénom(s). A l'intérieur de ces catégories, les entrées sont classées par ordre chronologique, lorsque des dates sont connues. Certains éléments de nom n'ont pas été pris en compte pour le classement: 1. Titres, ex.: Sir. 2. Particules, ex.: of 3. Epithètes non-géographiques, ex.: the Younger, Earl of. Trois remarques encore sur le classement des entrées: 1. Les noms composés en entrée (en général, un renvoi est fait au deuxième élément du nom) sont classés comme un seul mot (lettre par lettre); par contre, les noms individuels composés de deux mots ou plus sont classés mot par mot. 2. Les renvois ne précisent pas de dates et sont par conséquent classés avant les entrées de personnes de même nom. 3. Les noms de famille commençant par M', Mac et Me sont classés de manière homogène sous la graphie Mac.

E. Note sur l'édition de l'Index et des Archives 1. Classement des noms. Le classement des entrées suit les principes éditoriaux utilisés pour les Archives. Ces principes tiennent compte des critères suivants:

a) Les membres de familles royales sont classés sous leur nom individuel (et non pas sous leur titre). b) Les membres de la noblesse sont classés sous leur nom de famille. c) Les noms composés sont classés sous leur dernier élément, avec pour seule exception les noms qui ne sont pas d'origine anglaise. d) Les femmes mariées et les personnes avec pseudonyme sont classés sous leur nom le plus connu. 2. Intégralité de l'information. Pour la constitution de l'Index, des ouvrages faisant autorité tels que le Dictionary of Canadian Biography. et le Dictionary of National Biography britannique ont servi de référence, dans la mesure du possible, en ce qui concerne les noms et les dates contenus dans les Archives. En général, néanmoins, la qualité de l'information reflète la nature mais aussi les limites des sources reproduites dans CaBA et n'émet pas la prétention de reconstituer les connaissances actuelles sur les biographies mentionnées. Ceci vaut surtout pour les personnes moins connues, citées uniquement dans des biographies contemporaines et locales. Le caractère de document des Archives doit être pris en compte lorsque les sources semblent perpétuer des point de vue et des préjugés révisés ou dépassés depuis. 3. Numéro de fiche / numéro de vue sur la fiche. Grâce à des indications précises et complètes, l'utilisateur accède directement à la position dans les Archives sans devoir suivre l'ordre logique du classement. Dans la plupart des cas, la position indiquée mène directement à l'article biographique concernant la personne recherchée sous le nom de cette même personne. Dans quelques cas cependant, la position indiquée mène à un article concernant une autre personne (et donc classé sous le nom de cette personne) mais qui contient aussi des informations sur la personne recherchée. Dans ce cas, la position cite l'article biographique entier et non pas uniquement le numéro de vue sur la fiche où la personne recherchée est mentionnée.

F. Abréviations Quelques abréviations sont régulièrement utilisées dans l'Index, surtout en liaison avec les noms, les dates et les professions. Les plus importantes sont présentées ci-dessous: a. aussi (also) aft. après (afterwards) c. [précédant une date] vers (circa) c. Conclusion Malgré tous les efforts pour garantir l'exactitude et l'intégralité de l'Index Biographique Canadien, il est impossible dans un ouvrage d'une telle ampleur d'exclure complètement toute erreur, omission ou contradiction. Bien que les éditeurs ne puissent assumer la responsabilité pour la représentation erronée de personnages historiques, nous vous sommes reconnaissants de nous signaler les erreurs rencontrées et de nous indiquer d'éventuelles informations supplémentaires. Der Kanadische Biographische Index (CaBI) bietet in leicht zugänglicher Form die biographischen Kurzeinträge zu mehr als 90 000 Persönlichkeiten, die im Kanadischen Biographischen Archiv (CaBA) enthalten sind. Für das im Jahr 2003 fertiggestellte CaBA wurden Biographien aus 162 Nachschlagewerken (in 186 Bänden) auf 421 Mikrofiches in ein einziges Alphabet gebracht. Der Berichtszeitraum der Quellen umfaßt die Jahre 1848 bis 1997. Für jede enthaltene Person wurde ein Indexeintrag erstellt und elektronisch erfaßt, aus der so entstandenen Datenbank wurde der vorliegende Index produziert.

Zusätzlich zu etwa 90000 Haupteinträgen enthält CaBI circa 7 100 Verweise. Diese lassen sich in sechs Kategorien unterteilen: 1. Von einer abweichenden Schreibweise auf die Hauptansetzungsform, z. B. Lemoyne -> Lemoine. 2. Vom Ehenamen einer Frau auf deren Mädchennamen, oder umgekehrt, je nach der bekanntesten Namensform, z. B. Guion, Elisabeth -> Boucher, Elisabeth. 3. Von einem Pseudonym auf den bürgerlichen Namen, z.B. Black Dick -> Pierpont, Richard. 4. Vom bürgerlichen Namen auf einen alternativ verwendeten Namen, wenn dieser die bekannteste Namensform ist, z.B. Ta-tanka I-yotank Sitting Bull. 5. Von einem Doppelnamen auf dessen zweiten Namensteil, z. B. Hunter-Duvar, John -> Duvar, John Hunter. 6. Von aristokratischen Titeln auf den Familiennamen, z.B. Huntingdon, Seiina, Countess of Shirley, Seiina. Countess of Huntingdon.

CaBI erfüllt daher vor allem zwei Funktionen: 1. Er ist ein Index zu CaBA. Der Benutzer wird auf den ersten Blick informiert, ob eine gesuchte Person im Archiv enthalten ist und, wenn ja, wo die Information im Archiv zu finden ist. 2. Er ist darüber hinaus ein unabhängiges Recherche-Instrument. Die biographischen Grunddaten in jedem Eintrag werden in den meisten Fällen bereits ausreichen, um eine gesuchte Person zu identifizieren. Für detailliertere Informationen enthält der Eintrag Hinweise auf die ausgewerteten Quellen.

B. Inhalt der Einträge Haupteinträge in CaBI enthalten die folgenden Kategorien: 1. Vollständiger Name (soweit bekannt). Diese Kategorie enthält auch Adels- und andere Titel, ebenso zum Namen gehörende Beinamen. 2. Andere Namensformen (falls vorhanden). Dazu gehören abweichende Schreibweisen - von besonderer Bedeutung in älteren Quellen zum französichen Adel - sowie angenommene oder erworbene Namen, etwa Pseudonyme, Spitz- und Ehenamen. 3. Lebensdaten. Nach Möglichkeit werden Geburts- und Sterbejahr genannt. Sind diese nicht bekannt, wird das Wirken einer Person entsprechend der verfügbaren Information durch ein einzelnes Datum, einen Zeitraum oder eine ungefähre Angabe, z.B. „early 19th Century", zeitlich eingeordnet. Ausnahmen von dieser Regel bilden Einträge zu Familien und zu einigen wenigen Personen, bei denen selbst eine ungefähre Angabe nicht möglich war. 4. Beruf(e). Jeder Eintrag nennt eine oder mehrere Berufsbezeichnungen, um die Tätigkeit einer Person so genau wie möglich zu beschreiben. Öffentliche und / oder politische Ämter werden ebenso angegeben. Hatte eine Person mehrere solcher Ämter inne, wird nur die bedeutendste Position genannt. In manchen Fällen handelt es sich nicht um eine Berufsbezeichnung im engeren Sinne, sondern eher um eine Angabe dessen, worauf die Bedeutung der Person gründet, etwa „Centenarian" oder „Murder victim". 5. Quelle(n). Jeder Eintrag nennt alle Quellenwerke, die Informationen zur Person enthalten. In den meisten Fällen ist dies nur ein Werk, bei bedeutenderen Persönlichkeiten in der Regel mehrere. Ein alphabetisches Verzeichnis aller 162 Quellenwerke, alphabetisch sortiert nach deren im Eintrag verwendeten Kurztiteln, findet sich auf den folgenden Seiten. 6. Fundstelle(n). CaBI nennt am Ende jedes Eintrags die genaue Fundstelle im Archiv: die Fiche-Nummer, danach die Nummer des Feldes auf dem Fiche. Erscheint eine Biographie auf mehr als einem Fiche, werden die verschiedenen Fundstellen durch ein Semikolon getrennt.

D. Ordnungskriterien Haupteinträge und Querverweise werden alphabetisch angeordnet, auch wenn dies nicht immer der Ordnung im Archiv entspricht. Initialen und andere Abkürzungsformen stehen dabei an erster Stelle. Bei gleichlautenden Namen ist die Reihenfolge wie folgt: 1. persönlicher Name, z.B. Red Cloud 2. Gruppeneinträge für Familien, Dynastien etc. oder Nachname ohne Vorname(n). 3. Nachname mit Vörname(n). Innerhalb dieser Sortierungskriterien wird chronologisch nach verfügbaren Daten sortiert. Bestimmte Bestandteile des Namens haben keinen Einfluß auf die Sortierung: 1. Präfixe, z. B. Sir 2. Artikel, z. B. of 3. Nicht-geographische Beinamen, z. B. the Younger, Earl of Weiterhin ist zur Anordnung zu bemerken: 1. Zusammengesetzte Nachnamen, die als Ansetzungsformen verwendet werden (üblicherweise wird auf den letzten Namensteil verwiesen) sortieren wie ein Wort (Buchstabe für Buchstabe), während aus zwei oder mehr Wörtern bestehende persönliche Namen Wort für Wort sortiert werden. 2. Verweisungen nennen keine Daten und stehen daher vor Haupteinträgen zu Personen des selben Namens. 3. Mit M', Mac and Mc beginnende Nachnamen werden einheitlich unter der Schreibweise Mac eingeordnet.

E. Editorische Hinweise zum Index und zum Archiv 1. Namensansetzung. Die Namensansetzung folgt der bei der Bearbeitung der Archive gewählten Ansetzungsform. Dabei wurden die folgenden Prinzipien angewandt: a) Angehörige regierender Häuser werden unter dem persönlichen Namen angesetzt. b) Adelige werden unter dem Nachnamen angesetzt. c) Zusammengesetzte Nachnamen werden unter ihrem letzten Namensteil eingeordnet, mit Ausnahme von Namen nicht-englischsprachigen Ursprungs. d) Verheiratete Frauen und Personen mit Pseudonymen werden unter der bekanntesten Namensform angesetzt.

Vollständigkeit der Information: Standardwerke wie das Dictionary of Canadian Biography oder das britische Dictionary of National Biography wurden nach Möglichkeit als maßgebend für die Angaben von Namen und Daten im CaBA verwendet. Grundsätzlich spiegelt die im CaBI gegebene Information die Qualität aber auch die Grenzen der im Archiv reproduzierten Quellenwerke und erhebt keinen Anspruch auf vollständige Wiedergabe des heutigen Wissensstandes zu den darin verzeichneten Biographien. Dies gilt besonders bei weniger bekannten Personen, über die Informationen lediglich in lokalgeschichtlichen oder zeitgenössischen Quellen zu finden sind. Insbesondere ist der dokumentarische Charakter dieses Indexes zu berücksichtigen, wenn hier inzwischen revidierte oder verworfene Sichtweisen bzw. Datierungen weiterhin zu finden sind. 3. Fundstellen. Durch die präzise und umfassende Angabe der Fundstelle gelangt der Benutzer direkt zu den entsprechenden Feldern auf den Mikrofiches des CaBA, ohne hierfür die Logik der Anordnung im Archiv nachvollziehen zu müssen. Meist bezieht sich die Angabe der Fundstelle auf Artikel zu einer einzelnen Person, eingeordnet unter deren Namen, gelegentlich aber auch auf Informationen, die in einem Artikel zu einer anderen Person eingebettet und daher unter einem anderen Namen angesetzt sind. In diesem Fall bezieht sich die genannte Feld-Nummer auf den gesamten Artikel und nicht nur auf die Felder, auf denen die Information zur gesuchten Person zu finden ist.

Abschließende Bemerkung Trotz größter Bemühungen um Genauigkeit und Vollständigkeit des Kanadischen Biographischen Indexes lassen sich in einem Werk dieses Umfangs und dieser Fülle an Information gelegentlich auftretende Irrtümer, Auslassungen und Widersprüche nicht ganz vermeiden. Auch wenn die Herausgeber keine Verantwortung für eventuell falsche Darstellung historischer Figuren übernehmen können, so nehmen wir doch Hinweise auf Fehler und weiterführende Informationen dankbar entgegen. Der CaBI ist einer von zahlreichen im K. G.
