Its area is about 660,000 square kilometres (250,000 sq mi). Alberta and its neighbour, Saskatchewan, were districts of the Northwest Territories until they were established as provinces on September 1, 1905. Its current premier, Jason Kenney, was elected on April 30, 2019.

Kananaskis Country Located in the western area of Alberta, Kananaskis Country offers multiple recreational uses for public and private events. Known for its beautiful camping sites, the park allows tents and vehicles to camp overnight. Calgary Tower Located at 101 9 Avenue SW and situated in the heart of downtown Calgary, Alberta, this 626-foot freestanding observation tower was originally conceived in honor of Canada's 1967 Centennial and as part of an urban renewal project to bolster the development of downtown Calgary. It was completed in 1968 as Husky Tower, renamed to Calgary Tower in 1971, and was a founding member of the World Federation of Great Towers. Best times to go: All Year 16

Canmore Located in the western area of Calgary, Canmore is a town near the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. Known for summits that include Ha Ling Peak and Three Sisters, the town offers beautiful views of the mountains with snow caps that are often seen in the winter months. Skiing is a popular activity in the town as well as hiking and strolling along the city streets to look at the boutiques and galleries that keep the area thriving. Peyto Lake Located in Banff National Park, Peyto Lake is positioned so that it's fed by glaciers. Known for its turquoise waters, there are several trails that run along the sides of the lake ranging from easy to challenging. There are viewing platforms in various locations where you can go high above the lake to take the best pictures of the area. Spirit Island Located in Maligne Lake near Jasper National Park, Spirit Island is a popular location visited by boats of all sizes. Known for stunning views of the Canadian Rockies, the story behind the island is that of two lovers, similar to Romeo and Juliet, who went to the location for their forbidden interactions. It's said that their spirits still roam the island. Guided tours are offered with information given to travelers from the time they get on the boat until they leave the island.

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Located near Henderson Lake in Alberta, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden offers beautiful cultural experiences for guests to enjoy. Known for being a symbol of the friendship between Canada and Japan, the garden features a pavilion and pathways along a quiet stream. While this isn't a traditional botanical garden, there are flowers and plants that bloom throughout the year. A festival of lights is held in the winter. Tours of the garden are offered so that you can learn about the purpose of the attraction and take pictures. Best times to go: Spring, Summer, Winter

LAKE LOUISE Located near Banff National Park and the Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise is a hamlet. Known for the beautiful emerald color of the water, the lake is fed by the Victoria Glacier. Snowcapped mountains can be seen in the distance, which complement the beautiful lake below. There is a hotel that looks out over the center of the lake and trails that are ideal for hiking, biking, and skiing. This is considered one of the largest ski resorts in Canada. Maligne Canyon, Jasper National Park, Alberta

MALIGNE CANYON Located near Jasper National Park in Alberta, Maligne Canyon is a popular attraction for those who like sightseeing and hiking. Known as being the deepest canyon in the park, there are locations that reach over 50 meters down. The canyon was eroded as part of the Palliser Formation. There is a waterfall at one end of the canyon and a bridge that crosses to offer beautiful views of the rocks and water. The loop trail takes about two hours to navigate depending on what you stop to see. Best times to go: Spring, Summer 30

MALIGNE LAKE Located near Jasper National Park in Alberta, Maligne Lake features peaks that tower over one side and a dense forest on the other. Known for the brilliant blue color of the water, there are three glaciers that are visible from the higher areas of the lake. A 90-minute cruise is offered throughout the year so that guests can get the best views of the water and the mountains. Spirit Island is a popular destination at the lake. TWO JACK LAKE Located near Banff in Alberta, Two Jack Lake offers beautiful views of Mount Rundle and trails for hiking and walking. Known for the emerald green color of the water, you can see a stunning view of the mountain's reflection in the water during what's called the Blue Hour. This is considered a rustic area with a campground and a twomile loop. Activities include swimming, paddleboarding, and hiking in the summer and ice skating, skiing, and snowshoeing during the winter months. Best times to go: Summer, Winter 34

ATHABASCA FALLS

The Athabasca Waterfalls, Jasper National Park, Alberta

Located near the upper area of the Athabasca River in Alberta, the Athabasca Falls is a rugged waterfall that's surrounded by the Canadian Rockies. Known for having one of the most powerful flows of falls in the country, the attraction is located near the Icefields Parkway. The drop is about 25 m down and 18 m wide. You'll likely spend an hour hiking to see the falls while stopping at some of the overlooks before reaching the viewing platform. Best times to go: Spring, Summer

SUNWAPTA FALLS Located near the Icefields Parkway in Alberta, Sunwapta Falls features an upper and lower waterfall. Known for being fed by the Athabasca Glacier, the falls are about 600 meters from the road. You'll see close to an 18 m drop from the top to the bottom as this is a relatively short waterfall compared to others in the country. This popular scenic attraction is an excellent location for whitewater rafting. Best times to go: Spring, Summer

LAKE MINNEWANKA

Lake Minnewanka, Banff, Alberta

Located near the eastern area of Banff, Lake Minnewanka is about five miles from the townsite. Known as the secondlongest lake in the Canadian Rockies, the lake is about 13 miles long and 466 feet deep. In the winter months, this is a popular destination for ice skating. It's also where many people camp to see the Northern Lights at night in the spring and summer. Power boats can be used on the water in the summer, and there are cooking shelters for those who want to enjoy a picnic. Best times to go: Spring, Summer, Winter

MORAINE LAKE Located near the southeastern area of Lake Louise, Moraine Lake is a glacier-fed lake that's part of Banff National Park. Known for its blue-green color, visitors can canoe on the water or walk on the trails that surround the lake. A popular attraction is The Lodge. This is where you can get food or beverages along with accommodations for the night. While on or near the water, you can be swept up by the stunning views of the mountains and waterfalls that seem to kiss the sky. Best times to go: Spring, Summer

JOHNSTON CANYON Located near the Bow Valley Parkway in Alberta, Johnston Canyon is a national park with plenty of recreational activities. Known for being carved by several years of water erosion, you'll discover bridges that lead to waterfalls, blue spring pools, and campsites. There are also ridges that look out over the valley and toward the mountains in the distance. THE HOODOOS OF DRUMHELLER VALLEY Located near the Drumheller area of Alberta, The Hoodoos of Drumheller Valley is a set of land formations that have been naturally eroded. Known as being a popular location for hiking, some of the formations in the valley stand about 20 feet tall. Each of the hoodoos features a base and a pillar made of sandstone, almost making them look like mushrooms that are growing from the ground. They are sometimes called tent rocks because of their design and because of the cave-like areas between them. Best times to go: Spring, Fall

COLUMBIA ICEFIELD

Columbia Icefields, British Columbia, Alberta

Located near the Continental Divide close to Alberta and British Columbia, the Columbia Icefield offers several fun experiences for visitors who enjoy cold weather and snow. Known for being the largest natural ice field in North America and in the Canadian Rockies, the field covers about 89 miles. Because of the ice melting and freezing again in the winter, the landscape tends to change throughout the year. Guided tours are available for those who want to take a bus to see the attraction. DINOSAUR PROVINCIAL PARK Located approximately four hours southeast of Edmonton, Alberta, Dinosaur Provincial Park is a fossil lover's dream. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to view fossils from a wide range of dinosaur species. While there, be sure to book a bus tour or guided hike for a closer look at the fossil beds. Indigenous peoples of Canada lived in Manitoba for thousands of years until the arrival of fur traders in the late 17th century. The assertion of Metis identity and self-rule led to the Red River Rebellion, which was resolved through the passing of the Manitoba Act in 1870 that created the province.

WApusk National Park The remote location of Wapusk National Park on the western coast of Hudson Bay makes it the perfect spot to get away from it all. The park is only accessible by rail or air and is approximately 914 kilometres from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Once you arrive, book an aerial tour of the site, head out on the Owl River in a canoe or enjoy protected camping in the back country. Seasonal polar bear viewing excursions are also available. Hecla Island Hecla Island is one of the islands within Hecla/ Grindstone Provincial Park in Lake Winnipeg. Named after a famous Icelandic volcano, the island has a historic village that gives a nod to its initial Icelandic settlers. However, the area is perhaps more celebrated for its natural splendor. Cycling and walking trails meander along beaches, through forests and over marshes. Saint Boniface Cathedral Saint Boniface Cathedral is located in the heart of Winnipeg, Manitoba. While the current church dates to 1971, at least five previous Catholic churches have stood on or near the site over the past two centuries. The modern cathedral is located immediately adjacent to the ruins of the previous church that was destroyed by fire in 1968. Spirit Sands Located in the western area of Winnipeg near Carberry, Spirit Sands is a trail made up of several short loops. Known for being part of the largest dune community in Manitoba, the attraction features beautiful spruce trees that almost appear teal in color when the sun shines on them just right. Although most of the area is sand, there are stretches of prairie grass along the lower trails. It takes about four hours to hike the trails to the top of the dunes. Grasslands National Park Located near Val Marie, a small village in Saskatchewan, Grasslands National Park features wide open spaces and is one of the 44 other parks in the country. Provincial Capital Legislative Building Located in the small town of Regina, the Provincial Capital Legislative Building is part of the Legislative Assembly in Saskatchewan. Known for being among the most historic buildings in the province, construction was completed in 1912. Laws are introduced in the building, voted on, and passed so that the people who live in the province can continue to have the freedoms that they've been accustomed to for over 100 years. Nistowiak Falls Located near the Rapid River in Saskatchewan, Nistowiak Falls is a beautiful waterfall that drops about 15 meters to meet with the Churchill River. Castle Butte (Big Muddy) Located near Big Beaver in Saskatchewan, Castle Butte is a structure that's freestanding in the Big Muddy Badlands. Known for the numerous caves inside the structure, the sandstone rock features trails that stretch about 200 feet high. The landscape of the city below can usually be seen quite clearly while you're on the top of the mountain. Wascana Centre Park Located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Wascana Centre is a large urban park. It’s known for its beautiful design, which the famous architect Thomas Mawson developed.
