The relationship between implicit and parametrized surfaces is subtle & deep. These point to a number of larger ideas in Mathematics. Curves (in 1-d) and surfaces (in 2-d) are the images of parametrized spaces, with one or two parameters respectively. What happens when you look to higher dimensions? What is a “surface” in higher dimensions? Images of parametrizations with n inputs are called “manifolds” or “n-manifolds”.

Manifolds are among the most interesting and fundamental spaces that mathematicians (topologists and geometers) investigate. It is only recently that we have classified 3-manifolds (this is a long story), and there are still significant open problems (conjectures) about 4-manifolds. The universe is a strange and wonderful place. Even more interesting is the implicit setting. What happens here in higher dimensions?

If you write down some polynomial equations in several variables, what does the space of solutions to these equations look like? Is it a manifold? What is its dimension? Such spaces are called varieties, and, though not always manifolds, they are still very “nice”. This leads to the subject of algebraic geometry, which has had so much impact in modern physics. There’s so much more to learn!

The use of terms like “basis” and “coordinate change” is suggestive rather than precise. Proper definitions have not been given yet are crucial to further study.

Likewise, a collection of vectors in Rn is said to span Rn if every vector in Rn can be expressed as a linear combination of elements in the collection.

The use of this terminology is critical to linear algebra, in which one speaks not only of a basis for Rn, but for an abstract vector space or a subspace thereof.

In brief, a collection of n vectors in Rn forms a basis if they are linearly independent and span Rn.

A basis for Rn, therefore, is a minimal collection of vectors that span Rn, or, equivalently, a maximal collection of vectors that are linearly independent.

In this context, the number of elements of a basis is equal to the dimension of the vector space they span.

A collection of vectors is linearly independent if no element of the collection can be expressed as a linear combination of the other elements in the collection.

The number of vectors in any basis for Rn must be exactly n. Fewer will not span; more will not be independent.
