pp. (2), 6. J.C.B., BM. 55001 This edition has an additional paragraph on the last page, stating ** There has been a treaty,” etc. Of such excessive rarity that when, in 1850, Mr. Drake reprinted it, he supposed that Mr. J. C. Brown’s was the only copy. It was reprinted as below:

News from New-England [as before]. Boston, N. E.: Reprinted for Samuel G. Drake. 1850, Sm. 4to, pp. 20. 55062 News from New England. Albany: Reprinted by “Joel Munsell

for WW. E. Woodward. 1865. 4to, pp. 22. 55063 Sixty-four copies printed on one side of the paper only, of which four were printed on Whatman’s drawing paper. Of this reprine there are ¢qwo issues, the publisher—a drugpist in Roxbury Mass.—thus explains the matter: ‘ By permission of Mr. Drake 75 copies of this pamphlet were reprinted in quarto. So far as the printing was concerned the work was fairly done, and in a manner tolerably satisfactory, with the single exception of an error in the paging; but the sheets being entrusted for binding to a firm in Boston, the work was done in a manner so entirely unworkmanlike as to induce or rather compel me to destroy the entire edition with the exception of 15 copies, which are preserved to show how unfaithfully and shabbily a job can be done. Sixty copies are already destroyed, so that the two editions consist of 75 copies only.” Fora reply, see

The original edition of the voyage for the discovery of the Magellan Straits, etc., performed by the two brothers Captains Nodal, with the original map, is one of the rarest books of its class. The map is almost always wanting, and is sometimes supplied by the reprint in a smaller form, from the second edition. In order that a purchaser may be certain as to the completeness of a copy, we append a more minute collation: 12 prel. leaves, viz.: engraved title with portraits of the two brothers Nodal; ‘Fee de aprouacion,’ 3-pp.; ‘Suma del priuilegio,’ x p.; 6 Tassa,’ 1 p.; ‘ Erratas,’ 1 p.5 £A Don Fernando Carrillo,’ 3 pp.; ‘ Al Lector,’ 5 pp.; ‘ Advertencias,’ 3 pp.; ‘ Variacion de ia aguja,’ 3 pp.; ‘ Reglas,’ 2 pp.; Text, 65 numb. leaves; ‘Tabla para saber las Horas,’ etc., 1 leaf; * Relacion ... de los Servicios de los Capitanes Bartolome Garcia de Nodal, y Gongalo de Nodal hermanos,’ leaves numb. 2-15. At fol. 35 there is a copperplate Map entitled ‘Reconocimiento de los Estrechos de Magellanes,’ etc., “I. de Courbes sculpsit,” 133 by 154 inches. The strait of San Vincente had been traversed by Le Maire shortly before the brothers Nodal, and his name has remained to designate it. But the Spanish map has a special value of its own, and is more detailed than Le Maire’s. Colonel Stanley’s copy sold tor £3 10s. Sce Tromel, No. 80, Rich, 158, Ternaux, 431.
