FOREWORD The Regional Language Centres of the Ir1stitute teach 13 major Indian languages to aid the meaningful implementation of the Three Language Formula throughout the country. They have prepared their own teaching m~terials for this purpose, faking into accoun~ the commonness between Indian languages and sha,ed cultural experiences of Indian learners. The course, divided inlo three terms. has a package of learning materials including audio-visual materials, supplemen~ary materials for different language skills and ~eaching aids, such as language games. The courses, running for ten months is intensive with 5! nours of instruction every day. These materials have been used in the classroom for more than a decade and are modified on the basis of experience with different batches of teacher ~rainees·

The Intermediate course follows the Basic course and it coveu a period of three months. It brings gradually more of the written language. This is to be used af~er the Intensive course material, already published. Major changes are taking place in the ~heory and methodology of Second Language teaching. Tbe emphasis has shifted from structure to communi.;;ation. These changes go along with the shif~s in linguistic 'heories and interests. While it is necessary to keep up these changes and do experiments to bring ou~ new teaching materials, it is also necessary to maintaia continuity of language teaching in the Regional Language Cen tres. The ma~erials produced by the InsU~ute have taken ~he good points in mauy \heories and methods of language ~eaching and ha'Ve p·ied ~o work out a synthesis whose success is evalua~ed more on the performance in the classroom. we have follnd ~his ma~erial performing well in our classrooms.
