INTRODUCTION This bibliography was originally compiled as a private help for my own studies in Sallust. When I was encouraged to have it published, it was impossible for me to adapt my materials to the requirements of Bibliography, as for example in the indications of publishers, the size, the number of pages of each volume. Consequently, the present work has no other pretentions than to provide the student of Sallust with a practical guide in the labyrinth of publications concerning this author for the last eighty years. A glance at the table of contents will reveal the principles of the system on which it is based. In the various sections, a chronological order has been observed. As often as possible, the items are followed by references to reviews and short indications of the contents. For obvious reasons of classification, many items occur in more than one section. Thus each section presents, in a nutshell, the history of one group of problems. For the period from 1879to 1964, I have endeavoured to give a complete list, with some exceptions which I indicate in loco. In general, I have excluded most school editions and most of the publications in other languages than English, French, German, the Scandinavian languages, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Latin or Greek. As it is, this bibliography includes almost one thousand publications. The data concerned, which have been compiled with the help of the bibliographical handbooks and other sources mentioned in the first section, have been verified, corrected and supplemented in various libraries in Holland, Britain and France. Of the latter, I mention those of the British Museum, of the Roman Society, London, the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and the files of L'annee philologique, Paris. Originally it was my plan only to publish a supplement to the Systematical Bibliography of Sallust {1879-1950), Leyden 1952, for the subsequent period. However, as it appeared that this bibliography was out of print, I decided to publish a new, augmented and corrected edition for the whole period 1879-1964. I thank professor K. Vretska (Graz), Sir Ronald Syme (Cambridge), Mlle Juliette Ernst (Paris) and my assistants G. Bouma and H. Pinkster for their valuable help. Bussum (J. F. Evertslaan 9), April 1965.

THE MANUSCRIPT TRADITION OF SALLUST'S WORKS C. CATILINA AND IUGURTHA 1. General Studies:

66. DIETSCH, R. : vide nr. 180: I p. 1-132: Commentationes. R: Wolfflin Ph 1861 p. 519-48. (!) Develops Roth's distinction between three classes of mss., later designated as mutili, integri, interpolati.

67. JORDAN, H.: vide nr. 181: praefatio. 18873. R: MaurenbrecherBJ 101 p.190sq. WirzZG 1877 p. 272sq. Hauler ZOG 1887 p. 834-41. Schlee JPhVB 1890 p. 60 sqq. The text has to be based on the mutili only (contra Dietsch); the integri are interpolated mutili, and so is V. Most editors of the XIXth century followed Jordan and accepted the superiority of P.
