GALERIE BARBARA WEISS BERLIN Late last year, the pioneering gallerist Barbara Weiss died in Berlin at age 56. Now taking the helm of her 25-year-old gallery, which helped establish the

reputations of Larry Clark, Nicole Eisenman, and Geta Bratescu in the European market, are her two directors, Daniel Herleth and Bärbel Trautwein. We spoke to the pair about how they plan to both preserve and evolve Weiss’s legacy in the years to come.
What are some of the key things you learned from your time working with Barbara Weiss? Daniel Herleth: Trust your own interests and beliefs about how you want to do things and what artists you want to work with. Be focused and patient. Don’t chase after trends but rather try to establish a sustainable, long-term foundation for both your artists and the gallery. In what ways do you expect the gallery to change or evolve under your leadership?
Bärbel Trautwein: First of all, we are very grateful to keep on working with the extraordinary program of the gallery. We want to contribute by further introducing the work of these artists to a younger audience and to curators and collectors of our generation. We are also planning to expand the program in the next years with a focus on artists of a younger generation. Looking back on the past year, what’s an exhibition you’re especially proud of? DH: An important exhibition was Amelie von Wulffen’s first show at the gallery last September. She was the first

artist to join the gallery after Bärbel and I started working with Barbara Weiss. Amelie has lived in Berlin for a long time but hadn’t done a solo exhibition in the city for a couple of years, and the exhibition was very strong and very well received. How did you get your start in the art world? BT: We both studied art and a bit of art history, Daniel in Stuttgart and I in Berlin. After we graduated I started to work for a curator and then for a gallery. In 2014 we launched our own space in Berlin, Oracle, where we are still holding frequent exhibitions. Daniel was already working for Barbara then. From the very beginning we were interested in doing shows with artists from our generation but also including older generations and historical artifacts. We did an exhibition with Peter Fend there that Barbara very much liked and we did a second exhibition with him at her gallery. This is how our collaboration began. Which artists should we watch out for in the coming year? DH: Geta Br˘atescu. At 91 years old she represented Romania with a beautiful retrospective this year at the Venice Biennale and has several institutional exhibitions currently on view or upcoming. She is an amazing artist with a six-decade-long practice that stood the test of time with great elegance and is constantly getting more international recognition. She is also participating in this year’s Documenta. From a younger generation we are very intrigued by the work of Puppies Puppies, and we have an exhibition with them at Oracle at the moment. Puppies Puppies understands contemporary consumer culture and its effects very well and chose to protect his identity while making exhibitions that are at the same time very personal and speak to a wider audience. What is the biggest challenge in running a gallery in Berlin right now? BT: In the past decade, Berlin has been given an incredible amount of attention and it seemed that the influx of young artists, curators, and writers would never stop. But some of that attention has been withdrawn and there is still not the same institutional infrastructure and collector support as in other art world capitals. So the biggest challenge for us is to reach out to an audience that is very decentralized and at the same time maintain a relationship to the audience in Berlin. MP

Daniel Lelong, Jacques Dupin, and Jean Frémon founded Galerie Lelong in Paris in 1981, and the New York gallery opened in 1985 under the direction of Mary Sabbatino. We spoke to Frémon and Sabbatino about how they’re adapting to the globalized market and which artists they’re most excited about today.

The New York gallery recently started representing Samuel Levi Jones and co-representing Carolee Schneemann and, in Paris, Marc Desgrandchamps. Why were you interested in these artists and how did the relationships came about? Mary Sabbatino: My personal opinion is that feminism, despite its flaws, is one of the most significant yet least understood social movements of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. An interest in supporting women artists has come from this position; we represent the estates of Ana Mendieta and Nancy Spero, as well as a number of living artists such as Nalini Milani, Petah Coyne, and Etel Adnan. I have been friends with Wendy Olsoff and Penny Pilkington of PPOW gallery for more than 20 years. The discussion to co-represent Schneemann evolved out of our friendship and we decided to pool resources and complementary networks in order to maximize opportunities for her. My interest in Samuel Levi Jones came out of a search for a fresh and new voice in painting. For me, the richness of his work stems from how he reflects upon urgent issues, such as institutionalized injustice, and embeds them into the picture plane. Jones subverts our idea of the grid. McArthur Binion also does this: You think you are looking at paintings that carry forward Minimalism, which was the dominant visual movement of his generation, but instead you see his biography, what he calls the “underconscious,” peeking through. This adds to the history of abstraction. Jean Frémon: Marc Desgrandchamps is undoubtedly the most promising midcareer French artist. He already has a large support from museums. We usually establish long-term relationships with artists, and he seemed like the right choice at the right moment. We are working to bring his career to a more international level.

Is there any particular aesthetic sensibility that you find yourself drawn to when looking for new artists? What qualities attract you to an artist? MS: I am attracted to artists who are searching for what it means to be human and what the complexities of acceptance, doubt, ambivalence, and authenticity look like. Some of our artists, such as Alfredo Jaar, hold a mirror to the world, while others, like Etel Adnan or Jaume Plensa, create a specific landscape or portrait that reflects a larger world through intimacy. JF: Galerie Lelong is a partnership. We recently renamed ourselves Galerie Lelong & Co. to emphasize this, so the program of the gallery does not reflect one single sensibility. There was never a precise aesthetic line in the gallery. When we start working with a new artist, we always try to keep a

BEST GALLERIES // EUROPE AND THE AMERICAS balance with the existing group of represented artists, and at the same time we are expecting his or her work to add something new and complementary. You’ve both been with the gallery for more than 25 years. What are some of the most significant shifts in the industry you’ve seen in that time? MS: The changes I have seen are many, and they present both opportunities and challenges. My experience undoubtedly impacts my opinions, but I’ll list some of these shifts: scale has increased in both business and the size of galleries, borders are more fluid, there is greater interest in the periphery, loyalty isn’t valued as strongly, expectations and opportunities are greater but so is competition, professionalism has increased at all levels, art fairs have undergone tremendous growth and importance and are a huge support to business, and the Internet is a blessing and curse, since access to information is open but information is often without context. JF: Back in the early 1980s, the market was limited to three main areas: the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The most significant shift has been the geographical splitting of the art market; this can be witnessed very clearly with art fairs, which you can now find in every region of the world. Another obvious evolution in 35 years is the access to information. Now transactions are quicker, but you have to keep a long-term vision in mind. Where do you think are some of the most promising areas for growth in the contemporary art market? MS: This is a very hard question to predict, and if I had the answer, I would be a star arts economist like Clare McAndrew. Growth is dependent upon the overall global economy and political situation, both of which are uncertain. To hazard a guess, the very top will continue to grow as long as there are “masterpiece” artworks to feed it. Developing art markets can grow, but not every gallery has the artists or networks to tap into that. JF: Africa is a major stake for the next 20 years. Indonesia is also opening at last. What are you most looking forward to at the gallery this coming year? MS: I am looking forward to bringing a transformative exhibition or opportunity to each of the artists under our care. JF: Our next two exhibitions are 35 works on paper by Antoni Tàpies, never shown before, and a new exhibition of Barthélémy Toguo. This is a good illustration of what we are trying to do here: To continue representing historical artists and the estates that have remained faithful to the gallery for many years, and opening to new promising artists who are emerging on the international scene. With over 30 years of experience, San Francisco’s Anthony Meier has quietly become one of the most influential dealers on the West Coast. The gallery, whose roster is comprised of institutional mainstays, mid-career pros, and promising up-and-comers, has helped San Francisco’s art scene thrive during a time when the Bay Area cultural landscape has become all but overrun with tech transplants and investors. We spoke with Meier about his beloved city, as well as some of the most important things he’s learned in his tenure.

In what ways is the San Francisco art scene different than those in Chicago, L.A., or New York? The art world is not the magnet that draws people to San Francisco the way that it is in other cities. People choose to live in San Francisco for quality of life reasons, making the art scene in the Bay Area smaller, more intimate, but also extremely rich and varied in its participants. Is there a place in San Francisco—art-related or not— that you would recommend to someone visiting the city for the first time? The Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. It’s otherworldly, and the park setting transports you away from any sense of urban density.
You’ve been dealing for over 30 years now. What are the most important things you’ve learned during that time? It’s actually been 30-plus years—a long time! The most important aspect for any person in the arts is to see artwork firsthand. Nothing can replace that sensation— the visual, physical, and emotional response to a piece. The information conveyed in person can’t be replicated digitally.

Has the increased presence of the tech and financial
industries over the last decade changed the dynamics of the Bay Area art scene in any way? Have these communities impacted your collector base? This sector of the art population as participants, active or passive, has indeed changed the landscape. Their presence is felt by the profit and not-for-profit sectors. In all, very additive.

Looking back at the last year, what’s one exhibition that you’re particularly proud of? I’m very proud of our Erica Deeman exhibition, which just closed. Erica is an emerging artist and she’s virtually unknown outside of the Bay Area. The show garnered more attention and press—local, national, and international—than any exhibition in recent memory and gave Erica a wonderful platform to express her vision. What do you have coming up? Lots of things, as always! Our fall gallery program opens in August with a sculptor named JJ Peet, our first exhibition with him. That will be followed by an exhibition of works from the Los Angeles–based painter Sarah Cain, with whom we’ve been working since she

was in the UC Berkeley MFA program. And then after that will be a Jim Hodges show. Additionally, we have continued participation in a number of art fairs: Art Basel (where Donald Moffett will install his fantastic audio piece IMPEACH in the Unlimited section), Frieze Masters, and Art Basel Miami Beach. Finally, several of our artists have public projects and institutional shows coming up: Leonardo Drew has a fantastic installation in the main atrium of the de Young Museum through October, Dave Muller is participating in Prospect.4 New Orleans opening November, Janine Antoni has ongoing performances at the Tang Museum through the middle of the summer, and Sarah Cain will install a new sitespecific wall drawing for the ICA L.A. opening in September, just to name a few. ARREDONDO \ AROZARENA MEXICO CITY Located in the city’s increasingly trendy Colonia Juárez neighborhood, the contemporary art space originally called talcual gallery took the name of its directors, Andrés Arredondo and Georgina Arozarena, in 2015 after five years of operation. With a program that features emerging Mexican artists and foreign artists based in Mexico, the gallery also encompasses a frontwindow room dubbed “Proyecto Vitrina,” which features collaborative projects designed to pique the curiosity of passersby.

How did you first become involved in the art scene, and what led the two of you to open your own gallery? Andrés Arredondo: The first time I was interested in art was during a visit to the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Without noticing, I accidentally stepped on a work of art on the floor and it wasn’t until I saw the panic in my brother’s eyes that I realized. I quickly moved but was terrified of what could happen. Later, trying to understand what triggered that particular feeling I learned about the work of Carl Andre. If art could have that effect on me perhaps it could in others. Art for me is a means of communication. Georgina Arozarena: I had been working at Kurimanzutto and I left to do my master’s when Andrés suggested I should join him at the gallery. We both feel passionately about the Mexican contemporary art scene and have always wanted everyone else to see the capabilities of the artists we represent and admire. Can you identify any significant changes in programming or direction since you opened? AA: When we changed the name of the gallery in 2015 we were acknowledging that the gallery, alongside our artists, had grown and evolved. It was then that we began to focus more on international platforms to show our artists’ work (we recently participated for the first time in ARCO, NADA , SP-Arte, and Art Basel Miami Beach). Our goal nowadays is to achieve a healthy ambidexterity, to produce amazing exhibitions at the gallery that we feel proud of and to find the right platforms abroad where we can show our artists’ work.

What artists do you feel particularly drawn to representing or supporting? Is there a prevailing aesthetic or sensibility that sparks your interest? GA: Our artists are very diverse, their work addresses different issues. However, I believe there is a constant search for understanding the self—through space, through society, through time—but understanding our roles in all of this. It is important to open up a conversation with the viewer and to reflect on issues and everyday life. AA: I sometimes think the artists’ work talks in the same manner as I do as I lay down in my psychoanalyst’s divan.

AA: The gallery is located in Colonia Juárez in downtown Mexico City, an area where a couple of years ago, you were more likely to find antique stores or sex shops rather than contemporary art spaces. Now it is the new financial district of the city. Foot traffic consisted mostly of people with little or no knowledge of (or interest in) contemporary art. That it is why we decided to open a tiny space called “Proyecto Vitrina,” which is literally a vitrine overlooking Praga Street showcasing collaborative projects between diverse artists and the gallery, offering to the pedestrians a show that could be seen by glancing for a few seconds. Other galleries have now opened also in Colonia Juárez, generating an attractive circuit. What should a first-time visitor to Mexico City be sure not to miss? GA: I would recommend visiting our Museo de Arte Moderno to see the museum’s permanent collection; they have extraordinary works by David Alfaro Siqueiros—like his Nuestra imagen actual. AA: For me, walking is the best way to get to know a city. A walk on Reforma Avenue from Zocalo to Chapultepec Park I believe would be a great way to do it. What would you say was the biggest challenge in opening and running your own gallery? AA: One of our biggest challenges has been to set limits to the exhibitions we present. It is difficult to think in practical terms when you get excited with the possibilities the artists bring to the table. We believe strongly in showing the work we think pushes a message across best. It will always be easier for a gallerist to talk about the work that most moves him or her. What shows do you have coming up? AA: During Gallery Weekend Mexico we will have a solo show by Marilá Dardot, an artist we both have admired for a long time and are thrilled to show. BEST GALLERIES // AMERICAS LEHMANN AND MAUPIN NEW YORK, HONG KONG SoHo may have been the site of Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin’s first gallery, but it’s Chelsea, where the duo moved in 2002 and have resided since, that’s their real home base. And that’s not going to change anytime soon: Lehmann and Maupin recently re-committed to the neighborhood, announcing their move into the new Peter Marino-designed Getty building in 2018. We spoke to the dealers about the relocation, as well as the gallery’s other outposts on the Lower East Side and in Hong Kong.

Your roster of artists includes many notable names, including David Salle, Catherine Opie, and Kader Attia, to name a few. Are there any underlying themes that tie your program together? Rachel Lehmann: We choose to work with artists who relate to contemporary culture, not just contemporary art. Representing more than 30 artists from all over the world, we try to create parallels between their different approaches. Many of our artists overlap in meaningful ways, even if their work looks very different. French-Algerian artist Kader Attia, Chinese artist Liu Wei, and Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão, for instance, are all invested in exploring complex socio-political ideas within a historical context. Or take Mickalene Thomas, Nari Ward, and Gilbert & George—each one presents cuttingedge, often challenging work, incorporating layers of content that address larger societal issues. David Maupin: The gallery has also worked closely with many other Asian artists since its inception, particularly those from Korea, such as Lee Bul and Do Ho Suh. We represent many strong female artists as well, which the presentation at our booth at Frieze New York this year highlighted. You opened a Hong Kong branch in 2013. In your experience, how is the Hong Kong art scene different than the one in New York? DM: Having the gallery in Hong Kong has always been about establishing a base to do business with greater China and Asia more generally, so it’s not only the Hong Kong scene that influences the gallery there. The New York and Hong Kong locations are both Lehmann Maupin; we don’t change our message because then we would be saying two things!

You’re moving into the new Getty building in Chelsea. What was the impetus for the move? Can you tell us about the new space? RL: The gallery has experienced

tremendous growth in the past few years, both in terms of our artist roster and staffing. With higher ceilings, more square footage, and state-of-the-art lighting and infrastructure, this new bespoke space has been designed to meet our expanding needs, as well as the ever-evolving creative needs of our artists. DM: We worked closely with architect Peter Marino—who is a longtime friend of the gallery and a seasoned art collector as well—in designing the interiors of the new space. It is important for us to be able to offer additional exhibition options and exposure. The neighborhood has seen a number of
high-profile galleries move out in recent years. Did you ever consider moving your main location elsewhere—Harlem or Brooklyn, for example? RL: David and I opened our first Lehmann Maupin space in SoHo (this year actually marks our 21st anniversary), but Chelsea remains New York’s premier arts district. However, a different physical location certainly offers new opportunities and audiences, which is why we opened the second gallery space on the Lower East Side in 2007. Other than the move, what do you and the gallery have coming up? DM: We’re very excited to be opening an
exhibition of new monumental works by Gilbert & George that will be shown across both New York gallery locations. In Hong Kong, we will be showing the Japanese artist Mr., and closing the year with Teresita Fernández. RL: We’re also very proud of our artist’s institutional shows opening this fall. Ashley Bickerton will have a survey exhibition here in New York at the FLAG Art Foundation, Alex Prager has a solo show at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Switzerland, and Liza Lou will be installing her monumental Color Field piece in time for the grand opening of the first major African museum dedicated to contemporary art, the Zeitz MOCA A in Cape Town. The late Miguel Kehayoglu started Praxis in Buenos Aires in 1977 with one goal in mind: to bring modern and contemporary Latin American art to a worldwide audience. The gallery has since launched spaces across Central and South America. Now, 40 years later, it operates a major outpost in New York City in addition to its large flagship location in Argentina, and represents nearly 50 established and up-andcoming Latin American artists. We spoke to Praxis’s Buenos Aires-based curator Cecilia Molina—who has overseen its program since 1996—about globalization and sustainability in the art market.
You’re celebrating your 40th anniversary this year. How has Praxis grown and changed over the past few decades? In 1977, before the concept of “globalization” was even a discussion, our founder—Miguel Kehayoglu, a businessman and arts patron of Greek descent—wanted Praxis to operate on an international level. This vision is what allowed Praxis to become, from the get-go, a dynamic and flexible institution. Over the years we’ve opened up locations in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and Peru. As we’ve expanded, our global presence has been increasingly supported through the New York location, and
by constantly taking part in art fairs around the world. I think we also have a great time doing what we do, which makes us open and approachable. That helps collectors to build and grow their collections. When did you open your New York outpost and how has that helped you better support your artists and collectors? We opened the New York location 30 years ago, in 1987. Praxis is the only art gallery in Buenos Aires with an additional base in New York, which has created a channel of communication about what is happening in the

Argentinean contemporary art scene, thus allowing many artists access to collections and museum exhibitions in both countries. What is it like to work with artists at various stages of their careers? In the art world, a sense of perception and the ability to stay dynamic are key elements. Tendencies and tastes are transitioning constantly, so we see it as our job to support artists through these transitions. Many of the artists we have accompanied during this process have become great figures of their generation, like Ignacio Iturria and Maria Berrio. It is fascinating to witness their growth and development. Looking ahead to the fall, what exhibitions do you have lined up? Being a six-story gallery, we have a lot of space, so this means our exhibition calendar is quite broad. A major solo show we’ll be presenting is the work of Patrick Glascher, an artist from Buenos Aires who makes large-scale drawings with graphite that are inspired by the landscapes created by the pioneer traveling artists from last century—with a contemporary spin. What was your biggest or most notable show in the past year? Since 2010, we’ve curated an annual exhibition called “Art & Sustainability,” and it has continued to grow each year. In the most recent edition, “The Human Condition,” we presented five artists—Gabriel Rud, Sandra Ciccioli, Lucia Fernandez, Rita Simoni, and Nestor Crovetto—who address the world today and how it could shape our future. If you had to name one dream acquisition, what would it be? We never really intend to own a particular work of art. Our goal is to establish an archive of the exhibitions that we have shown over the past 40 years. We collect a small work from every exhibition. The idea is that this collection will develop organically over time and that in the future, we can provide a lineage of what has been happening from the late 1970s up to the present through the artworks in the collection.
